Letter Addressed To Obama Contained Ricin

Letter Addressed To Obama Contained Ricin

Two letters containing the potentially deadly poison ricin sent to President Barack Obama and a US senator are related, the FBI has said. The letters to Mr Obama and Roger Wicker have Memphis, Tennessee, postmarks and the same date - April 8.

The bureau said both say: "To see a wrong and not expose it, isto become a silent partner to its continuance." They are signed: "I am KC and I approve this message."

The FBI said it was pursuing investigative leads to determine who sent the letters.
Earlier, Senator Claire McCaskill claimed authorities have a suspect in mind for the Wicker case, but no one has been charged.
Meanwhile, Senator Carl Levin said a worker at his regional office in Saginaw, Michigan, had received a suspicious letter.

He said: "The letter was not opened, and the staffer followed the proper protocols for the situation, including alerting the authorities, who are now investigating.
"We do not know yet if the mail presented a threat. I'm grateful for my staff's quick response and for government personnel at all levels who are responding."

In Arizona, a suspicious letter containing an oily substance that was sent to the Phoenix office of Senator Jeff Flake caused a brief scare before the mail was tested and found to be harmless.

The FBI said preliminary tests on suspicious substances in the two earlier letters sent to Mr Obama and Mr Wicker indicated it was ricin.

Secret Service spokesman Ed Donovan said the letter to Mr Obama, received on Tuesday, was intercepted at a facility awayfrom the White House. The letter to Mississippi Republican Mr Wicker was also intercepted at an off-site mail facility.

Tensions have been high in Washington and across the US since the deadly bombings on Monday at the Boston Marathon that killed three people and injured more than 170.
The FBI said there was no indication of a connection to the marathon attacks.

Mourners Bid Farewell At Margaret Thatcher's Funeral

Mourners Bid Farewell At Margaret Thatcher's Funeral

Margaret Thatcher was given a final farewell Wednesday with full military honours that saw her coffin applauded through the streets of London, as the queen led mourners in paying their respects to Britain’s divisive and influential former prime minister.

Tens of thousands of well-wishers turned out to watchThatcher’s coffin as it travelled to St Paul’s Cathedral, many breaking into spontaneous applause and throwing flowers.

Some 700 soldiers, sailors and airmen in full ceremonial uniformlined the route from the Houses of Parliament where Thatcher’s body had lain overnight, as guns were fired every minute from the Tower of London.

Some 4,000 police officers were deployed, amid heightened security following the bombings at the Boston Marathon.
At the cathedral, Queen Elizabeth II led mourners from 170 countries in a rare tribute from the monarch, who has not attended a prime ministerial funeral since Winston Churchill died in 1965.

Prime Minister David Cameron, leader of Thatcher’s Conservative party, attended along with former premiers John Major, Tony Blair and Gordon Brown and politicians from across the political divide.

Senior global figures including Thatcher’s fellow Cold War warrior Henry Kissinger, the former US secretary of state, and showbusiness stars Joan Collins and Shirley Bassey joined the former prime minister’s family in paying their respects.

In his address, Bishop of London Richard Chartres said Thatcher, who transformed Britain and helped end the Cold War during her 11 years in power, was a polarising figure but insisted there was no place for politics at her funeral.

“After the storm of a life led in the heat of political controversy, there is a great calm,” he told the2,300 assembled guests, all clad in black.
“The storm of conflicting opinions centres on the Mrs Thatcher who became a symbolic figure — even an -ism. Today theremains of the real Margaret Hilda Thatcher are here at her funeral service.”

The coffin of the “Iron Lady” had arrived at St Paul’s following an hour-long procession from Parliament, which she dominatedfor half a century in the Houses of Commons and Lords.
Draped in the Union Jack flag anddressed with flowers and a card reading “Beloved Mother — Always in Our Hearts”, the coffin was carried first in a hearse and then on a horse-drawn gun carriage.

Parliament’s famous Big Ben bell was silenced for the procession, while a Royal Marines band led the cortege laying funeral marches by Chopin, Beethoven and Mendelssohn.

“I wanted to pay my respects to the best prime minister since Churchill,” said Gloria Martin, a property developer in her 60s with an array of “I Love Maggie” badges pinned to her chest.

“She was strong, she was resolute, and she put her country first above any idea of popularity.” The crowd included veterans of the Falklands war, viewed by many of her admirers as Thatcher’s finest hour and whichplayed a central theme of the ceremony.

Servicemen from units that fought in the 1982 conflict with Argentina carried Thatcher’s coffin into St Paul’s while two brothers who served in the war walked behind.

Argentina was pointedly not represented among the mourners at the service, who included the prime ministers of Canada, Israel, Italy, Poland and Kuwait. But the pomp and splendour — paid for with millions of pounds of public money — have sparked criticism from those who argue that Thatcher was too polarising a figure to merit such a state-sponsored send-off.

“It is a fitting tribute The funeral included Christian hymns reflecting Thatcher’s strictMethodist upbringing, and Bible readings by Cameron and Thatcher’s granddaughter Amanda, followed by a blessing from the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby.

Her body was to be cremated in a private ceremony attended by her twin children Mark and Carol, 59, and other family members. Britain’s first female prime minister, who was in office from 1979 to 1990, had suffered fromdementia and was rarely seen in public for the final years of her life. She died from a stroke aged 87 nine days ago.

Her death prompted tributes poured in from around the world for the role she played in bringing down the Iron Curtain, but sparked renewed debate at home over her legacy.

Okonjo-Iweala's Mother Kidnap Cases, Gang Confesses+ President Jonathan's Name Mentioned

Okonjo-Iweala's Mother Kidnap Cases, Gang Confesses+ President Jonathan's Name Mentioned

A former servant at the palace of the traditional ruler of Ogwashi-Uku, Delta State, where the mother of the Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, was kidnappedhas confessed that he gave the kidnappers the necessary information for the dirty job.

He said, “I’m 32 years old and I worked in the palace from 2007 to 2012 after which I left because the pay [my salary] was too little.
A friend of mine approached me and told me that I could make a lot of money if I gave kidnappers information on how to get intothe palace."

The suspect, Chiejine Onochie, told Punch that although the kidnappers collected N13m as ransom before the 83-year-old Prof. Kamene Okonjo was released last December, he wasnot given any money and therefore, was not culpable.

“After the operation, I did not get a dime. It was later that I learnt that they had collected N13m as ransom. I felt cheated and I left everything to God.
"I cannot be held for the crime because when police started arresting people, I went to report at the station voluntarily,I was not dragged to the station,”
Onochie insisted.

Another suspect, Jideofor Ogbue, aka Marvelous, who claimed to be the leader of the gang, said after gaining entrance into the palace, he and his gang members did not force Okonjo out of the palace but she followed them willingly after they had told her that they were sent by President Goodluck Jonathan.

The 22-year-old said, “It was my friend, Ifeanyi, that informed me about the operation. On the day of the kidnap, we had no difficulty because Onochie had told us that the security around the palace was lax. Although 12 of us were involved in the operation, only eight actually went to the palace.
“We went with three AK47 rifles and a pump-action rifle. When the woman (Okonjo) saw us, she asked who we were and we told her that President Goodluck Jonathan sent us from Abuja to arrest her because her daughter (Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala) had embezzled public funds.
“We took her to Kwale and her family paid us N13m as ransom. They packaged the money in polythene bags and dropped it around an expressway in Benin. My share was N2m.”

Another guy, Chukwuma Okoh, who claimed to be a graduate of Accounting and Finance from Ambrose Alli University, said he joined the gang because of unemployment. He said he was not given any money after the operation.

He said, “I’m 31 years old and I graduated in 2007. Since then, it has been hard to get a decent job. It was Onochie that brought the idea of kidnapping Okonjo-Iweala’s mother. However, as God is my witness, I did not receive a dime from the gang after the operation.”

The Lagos Commissioner of Police, Umar Manko, while parading the suspects, said they were arrested in different states comprising Edo, Enugu, Delta and Anambra.
