25 political parties listed for Anambra LG poll

No fewer than 25 political parties
will participate in the Anambra
Local Council poll slated for Jan.
11.

The Acting Chairman of the State
Independent Electoral
Commission, Mr Sylvester
Okonkwo, disclosed this while
speaking with newsmen on the
preparedness of the commission
on Monday in Akwa.

The chairman said that the
number of political parties was
the highest in the country in the
conduct of any local council polls.
He said that some of the parties
included: the Peoples Democratic
Party, Action Alliance, All
Progressives Congress, Labour
Party, All Progressives Grand
Alliance and Accord Party.

Okonkwo, however, said that he
only received a text message from
the APC stating its withdrawal
from the poll but there was no
official letter.

According to him, the text
message which was simply signed
“SDS’’ was also sent to the state
governor.

“I only got a text message from
them saying that they will not
participate because of the flawed
voters’ register used in the
governorship poll.

“They noted that since their
candidate in the last governorship
poll was in court challenging the
same register, they will not take
part in any election where the
same register will be used.

“But we already have names of
some of their party members for
the poll,’’ he said.
Okonkwo said that adequate
security had been made for the
conduct of the election.

He denied an allegation that the
commission had concluded plans
to ensure victory for APGA, saying
that the sensitive materials for the
poll were intact.

“It is a figment of imagination of
those making the allegation,’’
Okonkwo said.

He urged voters to come out en
masse to vote for the candidates
of their choice on Jan. 11.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN)
reports that local council election
was last conducted in the state in
1999.

The local government election had
been postponed more than seven
times since then. (NAN)

Don’t Contest 2015 Election- Prophet Warns Jonathan

Founder of the Evangelical
Church of Yahweh, Lagos,
Primate Theophilus Olabayo, has
once again predicted that the
country would experience more
crises this year, warning
President Jonathan not to
contest the 2015 presidential
election.

The prophet, known for his annual
predictions, some of which he
claimed came to pass, said unless
Nigerians embark on fasting and
prayer, more political crises and
killings would occur.

“This year, the worst type of
terrorism is coming; and
corruption if not checked will
cause great problems. Corruption
has taken over Nigeria and God is
about to judge Nigeria. There is an
angel that is going to cleanse this
country once and for all. The seat
of the president is vacant. If at all
there will be election, I see a
northerner becoming president.
The more they try to rig this
coming election, the more violent
it will become,” he said.

Olabayo, in an exclusive interview
with Saturday Newswatch in
Lagos, further said in spite of the
numerous crises, the country
would not break up.

“Those who are embezzling our
money; if they are not dead, some
of them would end up in prison.
There are so many fake prophets
who are saying the county will
break up but it will not break up.

There will be modalities. The
Federal Government may not be
powerful as before. There will be
state police. God has prophesied
it for long that there would be a
constitutional conference. We have
to pray so that it will succeed
because I saw a storm coming and
the storm would touch every
sector of the country like
economy, political; every sector of
the country will be affected. There
will be flood of the highest order.”

He added: “We have to pray for
most of our leaders like former
president Shehu Shagari, Maitama
Sule, Rabiu Musa, Bola Tinubu and
many others. They need prayers to
survive, and they should pray
against bereavement. This coming
storm would enter churches
because corruption has entered
churches.

“I saw the poor facing the rich.
Before the North Africans
revolution, God revealed it to me
and I said it. More powerful
revolutions are coming to this
country and that is why we have
to be very careful. I saw the death
of two prominent Obas. An
attempt would be made to kidnap
one of the governors in the South-
West while Bamanga Tukur would
be removed as PDP Chairman but
he would be given an international
assignment.”

Concerning President Jonathan,
Olabayo warned him against
contesting the 2015 election. He
also warned the People
Democratic Party against rigging
the coming elections.
“PDP think they have a joker but
that joker will fail them. If they
attempt to rig this election, there
will be anarchy in this country.
Many people will still join APC.

They will try to impeach the
President but they will not
succeed. President Jonathan needs
to mellow down so that he will not
be made the sacrificial lamb. He
has to be prayerful to survive
between now and 2015.”
Olabayo is however sad that in
spite of his warnings against
impending dangers, many people
fail to listen to him.

“They call people like us prophet
of doom but we are not bothered.
In most cases in Nigeria, people
don’t want the truth. All I have
been saying have been coming to
pass. Before Mandela came out of
prison, God said it, even before
his death God revealed it. Even
before Chinua Achebe died, God
said it and God revealed Chief
Bola Ige would be killed if he took
up political appointment and I
warned him but he did not listen.”

2015: APC Hunts For Vice Presidential Candidate, SEE List

The All Progressives
Congress (APC) has began its search for the party's vice presidential candidate ahead of the 2015 general elections.

According to report, a closed
door stakeholders meeting
chaired by a chieftain from Ondo
State, was held behind closed
doors last weekend in Ogun State
and having been convinced that
the presidential flagbearer will
surely come from the North, APC
is now searching for a vice-
presidential candidate from the
South in preparation for the race.

According a report published in a
national newspaper today, some
of the names tabled for scrutiny
with a view to being nominated
include former Governor of Lagos
State and National Leader of the
party, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed
Tinubu, Edo State Governor
Adams Aliyu Oshiomhole, his
Rivers and Imo state
counterparts, Chibuike Rotimi
Amaechi and Rochas Okorocha
respectively as well as former
governor of Ekiti State, Otunba
Richard, Adeniyi Adebayo.

An anonymous source at the
meeting said, "if former Head of
State, General Muhammadu
Buhari eventually becomes the
party's presidential candidate,
Tinubu will automatically pair
with him because of their
experiences and exposure as
former rulers.

"If any of the former Federal
Capital Territory (FCT), minister,
Mallam el-Rufai, incumbent
Speaker, Hon. Tambuwal or
Governor Lamido eventually picks
the party's ticket, any one among
Fashola, Oshiomhole, Amaechi,
Okorocha and Adebayo can be
nominated for the vice
presidential slot."

Atiku, Okorocha To Grace Lord's Chosen Church Crusade

Fomer Vice President Atiku
Abubakar, Gov. Rochas
Okoricha of Imo State are
among other eminent Nigerians
expected to grace the Lord's
Chosen Charismatic Revival
Ministries crusade which
commenced yesterday, January
4.

Meanwhile miracles are
happening at the crusade as two
persons, Mr. Sunday Igwebuike
and Mrs. Ikwunze Nma, who
claimed to have had Acquired
Immune Deficiency Syndrome
(AIDS), yesterday, gave
testimonies before thousands of
worshippers that they were
healed of the disease after prayer
sessions during a recent service
of the church in Lagos.

The self-confessed former AIDS
victims' faces shone with
rapturous joy while giving
testimonies about God's healing
power through Pastor Lazarus
Muoka during the first phase of
the church's yearly January
crusade held at Mgbidi
community in Oru West Local
Government Area of Imo State.

Umar Doesn't Sponsor APC in Taraba, Remain Loyal to PDP

Acting Governor of Taraba
State, Garba Umar, has
debunked insinuations in some
quarters that he is secretly
sponsoring the opposition
party, All Progressives Congress
(APC), in the state.

Umar, who spoke through his
Chief Press Secretary, Kefas Sule,
yesterday in Jalingo, said that the
acting governor remained a loyal
member of his party, PDP.

Kefas said that Umar has no
connection with any other
political party apart from his own
party that brought him to serve
the good people of the state.

"He is a core loyalist of his party,
the PDP, and will do everything
possible to work for the interest
of the party. PDP has done
nothing wrong to him and he
can't see him working against the
party that brought him to where
he is today," Kefas said.

Kefas further noted that Umar
"understands" the constitution of
his party, adding that the acting
governor's motive is uniting the
party members.

He added that his boss "is
working towards ensuring that
Taraba moves to a greater
height.":

Defected PDP Govs Are Not State Leaders – APC

Contrary to the stand of five
former governors of the Peoples
Democratic Party (PDP) who
defected to the All Progressives
Congress (APC) that they are
automatic leaders of the
opposition party in their states,
the APC leadership has said it
has not ceded the offices to
them.

The clarification came as top
leaders of the APC, who
championed its emergence from
the defunct All Nigeria Peoples
Party (ANPP), Action Congress of
Nigeria (ACN), Congress for
Progressive Change (CPC) and
Democratic People's Party (DPP),
have continued to reject the
governors as their leaders,
describing them as "strangers in
the APC fold".

The APC leadership has also
hinted that the party will hold its
first national convention to elect
its national officers in March
while the local government and
state congresses will precede it in
February.

In an interview, APC interim
national spokesman Alhaji Lai
Mohammed said the party did not
give the leadership mantle to any
of the defected governors and
urged APC chieftains in the
affected states to sheathe their
swords in the overall interest of
the party.

"We have not asked the new PDP
governors to take over the
leadership of the party in their
states. Nobody has said that.
What we agreed on was that all
the new PDP governors should be
given the same privileges being
enjoyed by the APC governors,
which is just to be given the
opportunity to appoint
representatives for the interim
committees of the party. Those
who are claiming that do not get
it right," Mohammed said.

"The defection of the new PDP
governors to the party should
make us happy because they
made us stronger in the states
where they come from. Their
coming has positive and negative
sides: the positive is that we are
stronger in their states while the
negative side is that those who
have been in charge of the party
are feeling threatened with their
ambition for one post or the
other."

He added: "There is a need to
manage the ego and interest of
those who are angry and feel
threatened that their ambition
might not being realised; but they
should all forget about their
ambition and work harmoniously
with the former PDP governors.
They should learn from our
leaders who sacrificed their
personal ambition for the merger
to become a reality."

The defection of governors Rabi'u
Kwankwaso of Kano State, Aliyu
Wamakko of Sokoto, Murtala
Nyako (Adamawa), Abdulfatah
Ahmed (Kwara) and Rotimi
Amaechi (Rivers) has caused
disaffection among stakeholders
in the states. The only exceptions
are Kwara and Rivers states
where there is no discord among
the members.

In Adamawa State, retired Brig-
Gen. Buba Marwa and Governor
Nyako are fighting for the soul of
the APC, while in Kano State
Governor Kwankwaso is at
loggerheads with his predecessor
in office, Mallam Ibrahim
Shekarau.

The same goes for Sokoto State
where Governor Wamakko and
former governor of the state
Attahiru Bafarawa are into a
supremacy contest.

At the centre of the dispute is the
condition given to the defected
governors that they would enjoy
the same privileges and rights
given to the APC governors in
their states.

To the defected governors, this
means that they are the leaders
of the party in their states, but
this has been rejected by the
founding fathers of the APC in the
affected states.

Although APC national leaders has
set up machinery to address the
logjam, the crisis is far from over,
thereby making political analysts
suggest that the party should
learn from the PDP which zoned
its offices to take care of various
interest groups in the party.

"The zoning of positions and
elective offices within the PDP
was adopted purposely to take
care of every interest group that
made up the party in 1998 shortly
before and after the Jos
convention, and this was why the
party still stays by the zoning
arrangement; and it was the
death of President Umaru
Yar'Adua and the assumption of
office by then vice president Dr
Goodluck Jonathan as president
that led to the crisis rocking the
party till date," a serving senator
said.

But Mohammed urged those who
are unhappy with the pact APC
struck with the defected
governors to put the interest of
the party and the country first in
their grievances if they wanted an
end to the poor governance of
the PDP.

He stated that the former PDP
governors came to the APC at the
right time, adding: "Our
registration would start in
February and they with their
supporters would be given the
same opportunity to register and
participate in the congresses
coming up in the same month
and in the national convention
holding in March."

Mohammed accused the PDP of
orchestrating the crisis in the
affected states, but expressed
optimism that the commission
set up by the party would resolve
all the conflicts before the
congresses.

He also allayed fears of
domination in the convention and
the primaries which would follow,
declaring that there would be no
zoning as every member would be
free to contest in the open
primaries for each office.

"By the grace of God, all the
conflicts would be resolved
before the congresses in February
and the convention in March. To
achieve this, the party has set up
a high-powered committee to
smoothen all the rough edges
and this would be done shortly
before the registration scheduled
for this month. Our congresses
would be in February and, by
March, we would have the
convention.

"There is no zoning in our
constitution. We would be guided
by our constitution. We have
been hearing a lot of rumours
and speculations that are not
true.

All our officers and candidates for
all election will emerge through a
transparent process. Nigerians
are interested in how our
presidential candidate will
emerge. We won't disappoint
them," Mohammed said.

We’ve Not Endorsed Kwankwaso As APC Leader – Shekarau

The Shekarau faction of the
defunct All Nigeria Peoples
Party (ANPP) in Kano has
distanced itself from endorsing
Governor Kwankwaso as leader
of All Progressives Congress
(APC) in the state by former
presidential candidate of the
defunct National Republican
Convention, NRC, Alhaji Bashir
Othman Tofa, party state
secretary, Rabiu Bako and
others.

Speaking during a press
conference held at Malam
Ibrahim Shekarau's residence in
Kano, Chairman of the defunct
ANPP, Alhaji Sani Hashim Hotoro
disclosed that the group that paid
courtesy to governor Kwankwaso
and identified with him as APC
leader were on their own.

According to him, Alhaji Othman
Tofa was an elder in the party,
old ANPP who had previously
declined to serve in the merger
committee of the ANPP.

He added that members of ANPP
in the state had written to APC
national secretariat conveying
their concern and the way
forward, saying they were waiting
the national body of APC to
respond.

He said, "It is in the public
knowledge that, members of the
APC coming from the defunct
ANPP Kano state, have on
December 18, 2013 under former
Kano governor, Malam Ibrahim
Shekarau delivered a letter to the
APC interim leadership in Abuja
conveying our concern and the
way forward.

"We requested for a clarification
of the rumour going round that
the five aggrieved new PDP
governors who decided to
decamp to APC did so as a result
of an alleged agreement they
reached with a section of the APC
leadership that they will be given
special privileges that are clearly
against all fairness and
democratic norms".

According to him, the alleged
privilege included state
leadership of the party automatic
tickets for all their members of
the state and the national
assemblies and also handling the
registration of members.

Hotoro said that all the privileges
were rejected by the APC
members of the merging parties
in all the affected five states.

He further maintained that as far
as ANPP faction of APC was
concerned, Malam Ibrahim
Shekarau is the leader of the
party in the state, according to
him they have no intention
whatsoever to decamp to any
other party claiming that they
would remain in APC pending the
outcome of the letter sent to the
national secretariat of the party.

"Boko Haram Is Temporary: Nigeria Will Overcome" - Jonathan Says

President Goodluck Jonathan
has assured that Nigeria will
overcome the Boko Haram
insurgency.

Speaking at the Church of Christ
in Nations (COCIN), Area1, Abuja,
where he participated in the first
Sunday Service of the year, the
president said his administration
would ensure the even
development of all parts of the
country. He said his
administration "sympathize(d)
with those who have been
affected by the executions "
carried out by the Boko Haram
group.

"Boko Haram is temporary, Boko
Haram will surely go. A number
of countries are facing similar
challenges and some have been
able to overcome it and surely we
will overcome Boko Haram. Life in
the north must change;
development must go to all parts
of this country," he said.

The president said nobody or
group can hold Nigeria to
ransom, saying "we will
collectively liberate this country
from the hands of any evil
person, so that we can leave
behind a Nigeria that our children
and grandchildren will be proud
of."

Mr. Jonathan said the current
tense political situation prior to
2015 general elections was
normal, even in developed
countries; saying it would not
deter his administration from
proceeding with its programmes.

"I will not bore you, but let me
reassure you again that myself
and those who have been elected
this period, that the political
environment are always noisy all
over the world. There is nowhere
you won't hear so much noise,"
he said.

"Even the United States of
America, not long ago, the
country was almost shut down.

For so many months people were
worried that the country that has
practiced democracy for so many
years could get to that situation.
But that is politics for you.

"But let me reassure you that we
will continue to work harder to
improve the quality of lives of
Nigerians. …..anything you start,
there is always a time."
The president said development
projects take time to complete
and asked for patience from
Nigerians.

"If you want to build a single
storey building, it must take you
some time to build. We are
building one small mini private
banquet for the President in the
State House…. with a great
company like Julius Berger, what
we thought will take six months is
getting two years," he said.
Mr. Jonathan said he would not
read a prepared speech so as not
to be misinterpreted.

"I'm not going to read a speech
because I avoid making speeches
this time around so that I will not
be misinterpreted. We are quite
pleased to be with you today. We
have enjoyed your approach to
worship. Let me again thank the
new incoming President,
Reverend Datiri , for the
sermon," he said.

In his message to the
congregation, the new President
of COCIN, Dachollom Datiri,
noted that the church has
suffered greatly from Boko Haram
attacks in its branches in the
North East.

He commended the President for
declaring State of Emergency in
Yobe, Borno and Adamawa;
saying it had helped check
insurgent activities.

"Your transformation agenda is
loveable and commendable. You
are always in church and God
will never forget you . When a
leader puts the things of God
first, all other things shall be
added unto him," he said.

The cleric assured of his church's
support for the Jonathan
administration, saying, "COCIN is
ever thankful to God for giving
you to Nigeria, COCIN members
despite political affiliations will
support you."

Among those who attended the
Sunday service were the
President's mother, Eunice
Jonathan; the President's Chief of
Staff, Mike Ogiadhome; Police
Affairs Minister, Caleb Olubolade;
and Minister of FCT (State),
Olajumoke Akinjide.

PDP Insists on Primaries for Jonathan, Automatic Ticket Would Be Impossible

Should President Goodluck
Jonathan make public his desire
to contest a second term in
office, he would be subjected to
a party primary in accordance
with the Peoples Democratic
Party's constitution, the party
insisted on Friday.

It was gathered in Abuja that
although there were no plans by
the party to amend its
constitution to accommodate
automatic tickets, there were
attempts to tinker with the
constitution during the special-
convention of the party on August
31, 2013. The party, however,
shelved the plan when aggrieved
governors of the party staged a
walk-out of the convention.

The constitution of the Peoples
Democratic Party 2009 (as
amended) empowers the National
Executive Committee to formulate
guidelines and regulations for the
nomination of candidates.
However, Article 17.2 of the
Constitution stipulates that:

"Notwithstanding the provisions
of Article 12 of this Constitution,
the National Executive Committee
shall regulate the procedure for
selecting the party's candidates
for elective offices in the following
manner: a. In the conduct of
primaries for the party's
candidate for the post of the
President of the Federal Republic
of Nigeria, the primary shall be
held at the National Convention
of the party specially convened
for that purpose."

A very reliable source in the
ruling party said that an
automatic ticket for Jonathan
would be almost impossible .

According to the source who
pleaded anonymity because he
was not authorised to speak on
the matter, giving an automatic
ticket to the President should he
decide to contest in 2015 would
further divide the party.

The source said, "The issue of
automatic ticket for the President
does not arise even though it has
been discussed in the party
before. Some of the President's
loyalists want it but this party has
a constitution. It is when a party
does not have a constitution that
you will be talking about such
issues. As of today, the party's
constitution has not changed."
When contacted, the Deputy
National Publicity Secretary of the
party, Abdullahi Jalo, also said
giving Jonathan an automatic
ticket was not feasible.

He said, "The party is doing
everything possible to assure its
supporters that their interests
will be accommodated. The party
has no intention whatsoever to
victimise anybody. The party is
focused on resolving the minor
disagreements within the party
and bringing about a lasting
peace.

"If you listened to what the
National Chairman, Bamanga
Tukur, himself said in London,
recently, it confirms that
consultations are still going on,
especially with our aggrieved
members. Our main
preoccupation now is the
restoration of peace in our party.

"And we are hopeful that our
internal problems will be resolved
sooner than our detractors
expect. Our situation is not
beyond repairs. The party and
Mr. President are committed
more than ever to resolve all the
issues."

Calls made to the National
Publicity Secretary of the PDP,
Mr. Olisa Metuh, did not go
through neither was a text
message sent to him on the
subject replied to.

Meanwhile, the Presidency on
Friday said Jonathan was still
consulting on whether to seek re-
election in 2015 or not and would
soon make his decision public.
Special Adviser to the President
on Political Matters, Mr. Ahmed
Gulak, said this in an interview.

Gulak told our correspondent
that Jonathan would not make his
position known until after due
consultations with political
leaders in the six geopolitical
zones of the country.

BREAKING NEWS: 65 houses razed, scores injured as PDP supporters clash in Benue

ABOUT 65 houses were razed,
yesterday, rendering many
homeless with others injured
as People's Democratic Party,
PDP, supporters clashed in
Loko, Katsina-Ala Local
Government Area of Benue
State.

The latest crisis in Katsina-Ala is
coming on the heels of moves by
the people of Loko and PDP to
recall Mrs Hembadon Amena
representing Katsina-Ala West
constituency in Benue State
House of Assembly over alleged
anti-party activities.

Vanguard gathered from an
eyewitness, who preferred
anonymity, that crisis erupted
"when a supporter of the
embattled lawmaker, Mr.
Shiaondo Ukor, who is chairman
of Motorcycle Hirers Association
at the Daudu unit, allegedly
accosted one Teryange, a
commercial motorcycle rider and
his employee.

"Ukor asked him to hand over the
keys of his motorbike to him on
the ground that he (Teryange)
disrespected him by joining
forces with some people to
unseat Mrs. Amena.

"As the two argued to a point of
exchanging blows, they attracted
the attention of passers-by who
joined the fray and the fight
escalated."

According to the source, Mr. Ukor
was alleged to have moved with
his supporters to the home of the
youth leader of Ugber Mr.
Aondoaseer Ornguze and razed
down his house after beating up
his family members.

The source said: "His action
sparked a reprisal attack and
further escalation of the fighting
and burning down of the houses
of notable and vocal members of
the party in the area.

"The fighting is still on with many
persons injured, while over 65
houses have been razed already,
as I speak to you."
:
When contacted, the Police Public
Relations Officer, PPRO, Deputy
Superintendent, DSP, Daniel
Ezeala, said he had received
reports on the razing of thatched
houses in the affected area last
night, adding that he was still
waiting for full details of the
crisis.

On her part, Mrs. Amena
confirmed the story, saying the
trouble was caused by those who
wanted to recall her for no just
cause.

She said the matter had been
reported to the Police in Katsina-
Ala and Makurdi.

Tukur’s Imposition of Cousin Started PDP Crisis — Nyako

Adamawa State Governor, Murtala Nyako, spoke with some journalists on his defection from the PDP, the state of emergency and other issues.
Some people are saying you committed political blunder by moving to APC. Do you agree?
If I like it (or not), my running for political office is over. Am I going to contest as governor again? Did anyone tell you I want to be a senator? I told David Mark, in front of President Goodluck Jonathan that God forbid me seeking to be a senator. I am not participating in this game.
Secondly, they started saying I wanted my son to contest as governor. I had to come out and tell them, I promise you on my word of honour, I am not supporting my son for governor in 2015, he is not contesting. Neither is my wife.
Political parties must continually evolve. In those days you could get away - and some of them in the past got away with this level of impunity - and nobody challenged them. Democratic culture must be developed from top to bottom and people down below should have a right to select their unit leadership and their ward leadership.
The practice of rigging election or anybody coming out to say I am putting this person at the local government or House of Assembly, has to stop.
What was the genesis of the crisis in the PDP in Adawama, which led to your defection?
We had a bye-election here, we finished the primary on a Saturday and on Monday morning, the Chairman, sitting down in Abuja, sends the name of his distant cousin on his mother's side, who never contested in the election primaries as the candidate for that election and Independent National Electoral Commission, which witnessed the primaries and the party headquarters, which witnessed the primaries, didn't shout to say 'no, we did not witness this man as the winner.'
The PDP hierarchy is corrupting our security and judicial institutions by the day. They can corrupt INEC, they can corrupt the Nigerian Police; otherwise, how can you explain a situation where governors were meeting, one DPO was sent by his boss to come and tell them to disperse.
You say you wanted us to sit down and reconcile with you, we sat down to discuss what action to take: whether to reconcile or not to reconcile with you and you sent a DPO to us.
This level of anarchy is it not worse than 'I, brigadier so and so; on behalf of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic, all you bastards are gone now!" We cannot wait for that, the people must see we are self-correcting ourselves. Self-correcting the political system, we will not accept this level of impunity. It's not just Adamawa. I have craw-craw on my foot for fighting in Bonny during the civil war, it has not gone yet, I was commanding officer of NNN Akpe. There was fire dropping all over me, all over my ship! You want me and my children to go through that hell of fire again?
Was there an agreement between President Jonathan and northern governors for him to serve for only one term?
In the first place, when that agreement was brought for me to sign, I told them that in the agreement signed in 2003, this President was number 73 (Obasanjo was there). We agreed that the terms 2007 and 2011 belonged to the North. He was number 73 at that time; he was the Deputy Governor of Bayelsa. So, when they came, they said I should sign. They said he had agreed he would sign that he would not contest in the year 2015. In the first place, I said I did not believe him because he did not give his pledge for the agreement signed in the year 2003, they said 'ah, ah Baba Maimangoro,' I said ok, I will sign. So I signed.
Who brought the agreement?
The Niger State governor was there, the Katsina State governor was there, all of them, northern governors, were there. They were there trying to get our support for Jonathan. The Niger State governor took it to him and he signed. Obj (Obasanjo) will tell you, he came here and sitting here pleading with me to support Jonathan in 2011. Jonathan came here and virtually took an oath to serve only one term.
Did Obasanjo come with Jonathan?
Absolutely! That he was going to serve for only one term. So, when he went back to Obasanjo to seek for his support for 2015, Obj asked him, 'How? You came here, you promised me in the year 2011 and I went country-wide to get you support.' I told all of them, Obasanjo told us that he had promised that it was only one term that he was going to do.
Who has that agreement now?
The Niger State governor has the agreement. We want to deal with people with honour. Not people who want to drag us into civil war because of impunity, because of lawlessness, because of not fulfilling their pledges that will only take us to civil war in this country. Leaders must be honest with their colleagues and must be honest with the greater society. I have my craw-craw from the first civil war, and if there is the need to develop another craw-craw in another civil war, I will stand by.
You feel so strongly about the declaration of a state of emergency in Adamawa State… (cuts in)
Since this Boko Haram thing started, we have not seen a single Adamawa man caught as a member; go and check the books. Then suddenly, you slammed a state of emergency on us. There are some totally innocent people, who sell food at night; you tell them go back to go home by six o'clock in the evening; there is curfew from 6 o'clock to 6 o'clock. How will they earn a living? Their own job is to cook food and to sell it between 7 o'clock and 9 o'clock in the night.
This has adversely affected the economy of the ordinary man but the evil few in Abuja don't care about it. All this hardship they are bringing to our people, they did not even calculate it. There is no need for it. I, as a former military man, wrote the present President three years ago, to say this Task Force you are doing, this is my observation. Like Obj (Obasanjo) said, not even an acknowledgment.
We, as governors, sat down and assessed the security situation, we advised, they said I and a few others should go and see the President to tell him about this security situation. He didn't even bother to give us audience till today. I was a naval officer, I was the one that established the security branch of the Nigerian Navy, I have been the longest-serving chief of policy and plans of the Nigerian Navy; at least, I know about security. He didn't even bother to hear anybody.

Jonathan Performing Better Than Obasanjo – Presidency

President Goodluck Jonathan has again taken a swipe at former President Olusegun Obasanjo, saying the ex-President left Nigeria in darkness after his tenure.
The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati, said this during an interview on Sahara TV on Saturday.
During the interview, Abati responded to questions on the several issues involving the Presidency, and tongue-lashed the opposition for attacking the President on almost all issues.
On the proposed national conference, which was scheduled to hold this year, Abati praised the President, saying it would be better than the political reform conference that was organised by Obasanjo.
He said, "The last political reform conference, organised by Obasanjo failed. It ended up the discussion of tenure elongation and third term ambition."
Abati faulted those who have questioned why Jonathan's government scheduled the national conference to be held the same year the country is marking 100 years of amalgamation.
He said the celebration of Nigeria at 100 is not about the Jonathan administration, but a celebration by the private sector, the state and local government and all Nigerians.
On the power sector, Abati said power supply has become better in the country than it was in 2007 and 2010.
He also criticised those who have questioned Presidency's budgetary allocation saying, "Everyone is involved in the budget- making process. Both the intelligent and the unintelligent. Even okadadrivers have become budget analysts.
"Nigerians are concerned about corruption. [President Jonathan] too is concerned about corruption."
Abati also accused the media of bias for the opposition.
"The media as we have it in Nigeria today is heavily in the hands of the opposition. Whatever the President says, they twist it," he said.
He also praised Jonathan as the only president that has given Nigerians a road map.
"What he (Pres. Jonathan) has been able to do is historic. We have never had a president in Nigeria that presented Nigeria with a road map," he said.
Obasanjo, however, said he would not join issues with the President and his aides. He said Jonathan is building on the foundations he laid while he was the President.
The ex-president, who spoke through his Chief of Staff, Mr. Victor Durodola, said he had said his mind in his letter to Jonathan and the President should accept his challenge in good faith.
Durodola said, "He (Obasanjo) doesn't want to join issues with anybody anymore after that reply (President Goodluck Jonathan's reply to the ex-president's controversial letter); he really doesn't want to.
"I would have told you that everybody knows that whatever it is that they are commissioning today, the foundation was laid when Obasanjo was President; everybody knows that. Most of the equipment came even before he left.
"But, as I said, he really does not want to (join issues with the presidency) at all. In one paragraph in his (Obasanjo's) letter, he said he had done his duties to him (Jonathan) as a former president, as a former Board of Trustees Chairman (of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party) and as a citizen of Nigeria.
"It is left for him (Jonathan) to accept the challenge and do what is right."

APC Can’t Get Obasanjo’s Support — PDP

The Lagos State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party has described the visit of the leadership of the All Progressives Congress to past heads of state and PDP leaders as laughable, saying the trips were only meant to give the opposition merger false confidence ahead of the 2015 election.
It said despite APC's visits, it would not secure the support of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, and other past heads of state, especially those who are members of the PDP.
In an interview the Publicity Secretary of PDP in the state, Mr. Taofik Gani, said APC leaders had embarked on the trips to visit some prominent Nigerians, mainly to embarrass PDP and excite themselves.
He said, "It has become really comical. It has become known that they are taking the Nigerian polity for granted. The APC's visit to past heads of state and PDP leaders were mere attempts at embarrassing PDP.
"There is no way APC can get (former President Olusegun) Obasanjo to be part of them. Interestingly, Obasanjo told them 'I can never be part of you.' They just want to excite themselves and give themselves pseudo-confidence."
Gani added that APC had become aggressive in its recruitment of politicians, because it realised that it was losing the confidence of the people.
He noted that as a result of that, APC has made no attempt to scrutinise the people joining its fold.
The Lagos PDP spokesman also faulted the report that about 1000 of its members defected to APC, saying it was mere propaganda. He, however, admitted that one person defected.
He said, "That story is just hype. The fact is that the man that reportedly defected was never a card-carrying member of PDP. He wanted to contest the local government election. He didn't get the kind of support he wanted from the PDP leaders in the Ikosi-Ejirin Local Council Development Area. He came to us and we felt that such a person should be allowed considering the fact that we didn't prepare for election in 57 local councils; and we needed people to participate, so we gave it to him. It is not a surprise that he decamped.
"What is surprising is that they said 1000 people decamped with him. That is a lie. They should show us the video. I see it as propaganda. It was only one person that decamped, but they are now claiming he decamped with over 1000 supporters; that is a bogus lie. It is very insignificant as far as our fortune in Ikosi-Ejirin is concerned and Epe local government."
He added that PDP was not relying on politicians to win Lagos in 2015, but on the "already-disenchanted masses of Lagos State, who would stand at the polling booths and vote out APC."
He said some people had been quietly joining PDP from APC but they have decided to keep quiet about it.

We Are in Jonathan's Sniper List — Buhari, Akande, Others

Former military Head of State, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.); Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi; a former Osun State Governor and Interim Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Bisi Akande; and a former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Mallam Nasir el-Rufai, have accused President Goodluck Jonathan of being after their lives.
According to Sunday Punch, in separate interviews they accused the President of having their names on a sniper list.
El-Rufai had on Thursday named the top politicians as some of the persons on President Jonathan's watch list. When our correspondents sought their reactions, on Saturday, they agreed with the FCT minister, saying they were targets for being in the opposition to the ruling government.
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo had in an 18-page letter to Jonathan, dated December 2, 2013, accused the President of training snipers and putting 1,000 people on a watch list. He also accused Jonathan of having a killer-squad.
But Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati, reacted on behalf of the Presidency dismissed the allegation, swiftly. In an interview he insisted on Saturday that President Goodluck Jonathan had no watch or hit list as being speculated by certain persons.
El-Rufai, on his Twitter account on Thursday, identified the top politicians as Buhari, Tinubu, Amaechi, Akande and himself as some of those on the watch list. The ex-minister stressed that he was number seven on the list.
"I am number seven on the GEJ (Goodluck Ebele Jonathan) sniper list, so I will only worry when GMB (General Muhammadu Buhari), Asiwaju (Tinubu), Amaechi, Akande, etc, are killed," he tweeted.
The following day, he added, "They plot and plan, and God too plans; but the best of planners is God. - Qur'an 8:30 … God protects us."
In his response, Akande told the correspondents that his life was in the hands of God, noting that the mysteries surrounding previous killings with political undertone had yet to be unravelled by security agencies.
Akande's media aide, Lani Baderinwa, on Saturday said it won't be out of place if the APC Chairman was placed on the watch list, being the leader of the opposition in the country today.
"You and I know that Nigeria is a country where anything goes and illegal actions are the order of the day. What else can he do than to be hoping that the wish of the enemies will not come to pass in his life," he asked.
He said the watch list allegation became more substantive as it came from an insider who knew the workings of the government.
"It was not Chief Akande who actually made the allegation (of a watch list); it was the former President (Olusegun Obasanjo) who has access to everything that the incumbent has, you cannot deny that fact. Therefore, it is difficult to say it is not true. The life of a man is in the hands of God, to be or not to be. Chief Akande remains unshaken." he noted.
Akande's aide said telling people to hold the government responsible was a wasted effort, considering that "all the murders in the last 15 years have not been unravelled."
Baderinwa added, "Most of these unravelled murders had the tones and tendencies of state-sponsored assassination. How then can we make noise that they (government) should be held responsible? As far as we are concerned, the life of Chief Bisi Akande is in the hands of God.
"And we know that despite his age, he has more to contribute to Nigeria than most of these people who are planning to assassinate other people for no just cause other than they are opposition."
Speaking for Buhari, the erstwhile spokesman for the Congress for Progressive Change (now merged with APC), Rotimi Fashakin, said Buhari's camp was not surprised that the General's name was on the list.
Fashakin stated that Buhari got 12 million votes on the platform of CPC, a 10-month-old party at that time, and had since remained a nightmare to the President.
He said, "Everybody knows that the name of Gen. Buhari conjures fear in the heart of the President. That is why they would rather wish that he is no longer in the equation. El-Rufai cannot be far from the truth when he asserted the VIPs that are in the wanted list. He is totally correct.
"Jonathan's presidency should tell us why (former Chief Security Officer to the late Head of State, Gen. Sani Abacha, Hamza) al-Mustapha is being kept in the Army. One of the things that will be giving the presidency sleepless nights will be how to rig. They used some incumbent governors to reduce the vote of the CPC."
Fashakin said Obasanjo's letter to Jonathan did the nation a great service, adding that the President's response did not clear any doubt.
He expressed his suspicion over the reinstatement of al-Mustapha into the army after 15 years in detention. He said it might not be unconnected with the watch list.
"Knowing al-Mustapha's antecedent as one who superintended over Abacha's killer squad, why shouldn't we be apprehensive that this government is trying to play with fire," Fashakin said.
He also said it was the duty of the Nigerian state to protect Buhari, as a former Head of State.
Fashakin added, "It will be a shame to the Nigerian state, if the amiable General is allowed to be taken out just like that. It is not for him to protect himself; it is for the Nigerian state to ensure that the dastardly plot does not succeed because he has served Nigeria meritoriously. It's a good thing that Nigerians have been put on notice. So, if anything happens to Buhari, we know that direction we should be looking at."
Amaechi also said that although his life was at risk, based on the inclusion of his name on Jonathan's alleged watch list, he was not afraid of death.
The governor, who spoke through the Chief of Staff of the Government House, Port Harcourt, Tony Okocha, said el-Rufai's findings were real. He, however, said God was his ultimate protector.
Amaechi said the signs that he was on the sniper list were open to everybody. He identified the alleged use of the Nigeria Police to embarrass his office as one of the indicators that he was on the list.
"We don't own the police or any of the security outfits in the country. They are all controlled by the Federal Government. So, we solely rely on God to protect us. The governor is a hero and he will be a martyr if he dies based on what he believes.
"We do not have any security measure and we believe that God is the ultimate protector of man. When a governor is being hunted with the police and when a police commissioner confronts a governor of a state at will, these are signs of threat to the governor's life," Amaechi added.
But while saying Jonathan had personally explained that he had no watch list, the presidential spokesman said any person who felt he had seen such list should feel free to approach security agents.
Abati said, "The President has already addressed that matter that there is no watch or hit list anywhere but if by any chance, el-Rufa'i or any other person feels he has seen any list, why has he not reported to security agencies?
"If he has the list, let him produce it, otherwise it appears he is just talking nonsense. It is sheer irresponsible talk. There is no watch or hit list anywhere.
"People should stop speculating about any list, they should stop making themselves appear to be important when they are actually not important at all."
The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mohammed Adoke, SAN, had forwarded a memo to the National Human Rights Commission, directing it to investigate allegations of rights abuse contained in Obasanjo's letter.
The memo, with reference number HAGF/NHRC2013/Vol2/5, was dated December 23, 2013, was addressed to the Executive Secretary of the commission, Prof. Ben Angwe.

To Challenge Our Enemy Tinubu We Need Political Soldiers in S/West - Kashamu

As the country prepares for the 2015 elections, a Peoples Democratic Party leader in the South-West, Prince Buruji Kashamu, has said the party needed "political soldiers that can mobilize and organize in order to challenge our enemy."
Prince Buruji, who attended a congress held at the Le Chateau Hall, Bodija, Ibadan, yesterday, said the number one enemy the party has in the zone is Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
According to him, for the party to reclaim the South-West states from the opposition, it must be ready to face its enemies.
He said, "As the chairman of the organization and mobilization committee, I believe in myself that if we are to win the South-West, we need strong people, political soldiers that can mobilize and organize in order to challenge our enemy. And who are our enemies? We all know that our number one enemy in the South-West is Bola Tinubu.
"And when you are not strong, tough and sure of yourself, you don't have anywhere to go if you have to contend with people like him. If we are ready to work, I am ready to go if you will stand by me. If you are ready, let us start with EKITI governorship election and make it a sample to them."
Also speaking at the congress, the chairman of the PDP in Ogun State, Mr. Bayo Dayo, reaffirmed the support of the zone for the National Secretary of the party, Professor Olawale Oladipo, National Chairman of the PDP, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur and President Goodluck Jonathan.
All the PDP chairmen in the zone called on the national leadership of the party to approve a date in January to organize their zonal congress.
The National Internal Auditor of the PDP, Mr. Adewole Adeyanju, said the party would overcome the current challenges.
