2015: Gang Up Against Jonathan, PDP Will Not Succeed – Orji
president-goodluck-ebele-jonathan-official_portraitGov. Theodore Orji of Abia said the current political gang up against Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and President Goodluck Jonathan, ahead of the 2015 general elections would not succeed.
Orji said this when he interacted with newsmen on the political manoeuvres by some past leaders to stop Jonathan’s second term presidential ambition in Umuahia on Friday.
“There will be gang up but they will never succeed. The president remained focused”, he said.
He explained that the party was getting stronger and stronger; there was a lot of re-engineering presently going on in the party.
Orji expressed the hope that defectors from the party would soon return, adding that new members would also join the party.
The governor commended the resignation of the former National Chairman, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, and described it as patriotic and a sacrifice to move the party forward.
He also commended the immediate past Chief of Army staff, Lt.-Gen. Azubuike Ihejirika, for serving the nation meritoriously.
Orji said that the president had the prerogative to re-engineer his service chiefs ahead of 2015.
“President Jonathan has done the right thing, we are nearing election and he has to put his house in order. The president has the prerogative to appoint whoever he likes”, he said. (NAN)

Tukur’s Resignation Not End To PDP Crisis – Yuguda

Tukur’s Resignation Not End To PDP Crisis – Yuguda

pdp.jpgBarely 24 hours after the resignation of Alhaji Bamanga Tukur as Peoples Democratic Party, PDP national chairman, Information Nigeria has learnt of a meeting between President Goodluck Jonathan and four governors from the North-east geo-political zone yesterday at the Presidential Villa, Abuja in a bid to pick Tukur’s successor.
This is just as the National Executive Committee (NEC) of PDP will meet on Monday to ratify the nomination of the new party chairman.
While the position of the PDP national chairman is zoned to the North-east where the former national chairman hails from, names of political bigwigs from the zone for the position are already being floated in the media.
The contenders for the position include the likes of the Transport minister, Senator Idris Umar (Gombe), who is said to be the First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan’s preferred choice; immediate past governor of Bauchi, Adamu Muazu and Dr. Babayo Musa (Bauchi).
The governors, who met with the president on Friday, include Isa Yuguda (Bauchi), Ibrahim Dankwabo (Gombe), acting Governor Garba Umar (Taraba) and Adamawa State deputy governor, Bala James Ngilari.
As fears mount over the governors rejection of the new party boss emerging from their states following the power play that ensued between Tukur and Governor Murtala Nyako of Adamawa State which culminated in the major conflict in the PDP, there are speculations the new PDP national chairman may emerge from Borno and Yobe States, controlled by the All Progressives Congress, APC.
But Governor Yuguda of Bauchi, who refused to admit that they were in the villa over the issue of a new party chairman, also denied speculation that the governors were not ready to accept any chairman that emerged from their states.
Speaking to State House correspondents shortly after the meeting, Yuguda said, “Are we God? It is God that gives power. Supposing he gives somebody from my state, a PDP state, what will I do? I will follow him. Let us not go into that kind of imagination”.
Flanked by Dankwabo, Umar and Ngilari, Yuguda urged Nigerians to be patient till Monday when the new chairman would be announced.
He said, “It is just mere speculation. It’s just speculation. We just came to say hello to the president and wish him a Good Friday. Well, Monday is the day NEC will decide who the chairman will be. So, let’s wait till Monday”.
On qualities they will be looking out for in the new PDP chairman in view of the crisis that characterized Tukur’s tenure, the Bauchi governor said irrespective of who was selected, there would always be crisis, but that it was the ability to keep such crisis under control that mattered.
“Crisis will always be there. If there is no crisis, there won’t be managers anyway. So, somebody must be in charge to manage the situation. And even at the family level, you have a leader to manage problems and crisis. So, we cannot be insulated from crisis. It is a continuous thing. The capacity to manage it is what makes you a good leader”, he stated.
On the high turnover of PDP national chairmen, Yuguda said, “Well, I have been discussing that with my colleague from Gombe and he gave me a very wonderful answer that we are on democracy learning curve. So, that’s the dynamics in democracy. So, we are learning. So, we will cross the line very soon, insha Allah”.
On the defection of members from the PDP due to Tukur’s alleged high-handedness, the governor said now that the former national chairman was out of the way, the door was open if they wanted to return to the party.

"We Don't Want To Lie To God About Who We Are" - Gay Members Relocate To UK

"We Don't Want To Lie To God About Who We Are" - Gay Members Relocate To UK
Reverend Rowland who was running a gay Church underground in Lagos, Nigeria, relocated to the UK and speaks on the new anti-gay law.

The initial reaction about his exposure was that such a Church could not exist within Nigeria as such things are common in abroad. But an uproar in the Anglican communion in Europe on gay bishops brought up the case of Reverend Rowland, a Nigerian who was residing in Lagos.
He was also operating his gay Church in Lagos. In his plot 145 flat 1, Jakande Estate, Isolo, Lagos, where Rev. Rowland Olajide Macaulay, the gay Pastor lived, the apartment was locked. It was learnt that the Reverend left his house on Saturday, September 13, immediately after a national newspaper carried the story of his homosexual Church and ever since, he had not been seen.
According to his neighbours, the Sunday service could not hold both at the Jakande Estate branch and the Ojodu headquarters of House of Rainbow Ministries after that publication.
Right now, Rev. Rowland has relocated abroad where he is presently running his gay Church, "House Of Rainbow Fellowship". According to the gay Pastor, "any negative effect on the anti-gay bill will have detrimental effect on the work and mission of House Of Rainbow in Nigeria. The lives of LGBTI people and their friends, families and allies will be further frustrated with fear and prejudice. We need to pray and stand up against injustice."
He continued:
"My Church is a voice of the younger generation of citizens, activists, and diaspora, and our collective belief in a more progressive Nigeria. They are afraid of our growing influence as we gather allies not just from the West, but from people that are not afraid but powerful and resilient. Right now, we are spreading their tentacles to every village, town and city around the world. The Church is also calling on faithful and dedicated local leaders who believe in homosexuality and lesbianism. Ten House Of Rainbow Fellowship local leaders are in Ghana, Nigeria, UK, Burundi, and Lesotho. Religion is a backbone to life in Nigeria, so, we all want to go to Church. But we don’t want to lie to God about who we are."
Macaulay first set up House of Rainbow in 2006 and openly held Sunday services in a Lagos hotel hall decorated in rainbow colours. A public backlash culminated in members being beaten as they left the Church. Macaulay fled to the UK after receiving death threats.
Meanwhile, Amnesty International and gay rights activists and groups have also condemned the law, calling it discriminatory and incompatible with international human rights laws to which Nigeria is a signatory.
Clashes and discussions over the new law still continue in the country.

Tukur’s Resignation: PDP Will Lose Taraba, Adamawa To Opposition Party – Ex-Chairman

Tukur’s Resignation: PDP Will Lose Taraba, Adamawa To Opposition Party – Ex-Chairman

Tukur-ResignThe immediate past state chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Taraba State, Alhaji Abdulmumini Vaki, has declared that the PDP will lose the state to an opposition party in 2015.
Vaki, who was Taraba PDP Chairman for more than a decade, made this known yesterday in Jalingo, the state capital while reacting to Thursday’s removal of Alhaji Bamanga Tukur as national chairman of PDP.
According to Vaki, the PDP would lose to opposition party in the state because at present, it lacks the leadership to win the polls.
He added that for a party to win major positions in a state, the party must have very effective officials and acceptable leadership that has a larger followership.
“The general confusion in PDP is a good development for the opposition, an indication that PDP is going to lose Taraba and its neighbouring Adamawa State”, he said.
He added that the ruling party has not only been lull in activities but lacks a credible leadership that can ensure victory in next year’s polls.
He said: “For a party to win major positions in a state, that party must have very effective officials in place and an acceptable leadership that has a larger population of supporters.
“The PDP should forget (wining) the governorship election and major political positions in Taraba. It lacks the leadership that can pilot its affairs here”, he said.
Vaki noted that the situation would deteriorate if Governor Danbaba Suntai was not allowed to resume duty immediately.
He said: “As far as the politics of Taraba State is concerned, the Acting Governor Alhaji Garba Umar and his team are not popular. They cannot deliver the state for PDP as regards the presidential, governorship, senatorial, House of Representatives and House of Assembly elections.
“The PDP in the state is a divided house in confusion. It has no direction. Party officials are not together. The State Assembly members are not legislating as one family. The special advisers are in confusion over their positions. The commissioners are counting days as they don’t know what would be their fate if Governor Danbaba Suntai finally takes charge.
“That is not all. Majority of the council chairmen are not working as a team with the Acting Governor because of the financial difficulties they are facing to run the day to day activities and programmes of their respective local governments, not to talk of executing projects”.
Vaki said, as a member and ex-officio of the party, he is raising the alarm now because he has seen the looming danger ahead.
“It is unfortunate and disturbing that what we were able to put in place during the Jolly Nyame administration and in the first tenure of the Suntai administration have been destroyed by some greedy politicians now parading themselves as key players.
“What happened in the state the day Suntai returned is a clear indication that Taraba people are not happy with what is happening in the state since the governor had the plane crash.
“Except Suntai resumes immediately, settles down and restructures the whole mess, the PDP is bound to lose Taraba State to another party.
“Without Suntai who is the elected leader, the PDP in Taraba is like a truckload of passengers without a driver”.

BREAKING NEWS: Nigerian Gays To Protest In Abuja

BREAKING NEWS: Nigerian Gays To Protest In Abuja
Nigerian gays and lesbians, under the aegis of ‘The Right Defense’, are daring President Goodluck Jonathan, and would soon stage a demonstration in Abuja, the Nigerian capital, they said in a statement on Saturday.

The protest is against the anti-gay law signed by the president on January, 7.
They added to the statement the masked pictures of themselves noting they were protesting against an“undemocratic and unlawful discrimination” of gays and lesbians and trans-genders in the country.
The demonstration in Abuja, they said, has become necessary to condemn what they call “an increase in threats against fundamental human rights of certain persons including LGBT in the country.”
According to the group, they also want to challenge the existence of the Nigeria human rights body, the National Human Right Commission “for its lack of integrity and principle in the fight against discrimination and violation of individual rights.”
The group said many Nigerians have in the past fled the country due to threats to life and harassment in their communities. Those who have fled include Alimi Bisi, Philip Temidayo Adabayo, Desmond Patric, Nkechi Ugo, Lara Abiodun Akinniyi, Simeon Demola Adesanmi, Penu K. Z.
“The planning for the unviolent rally is to avert the continuous attacking of the unarmed citizens and the unlawful and arbitrary arrest of wanted individuals,” the group said.

Umeh’s Removal As APGA Chairman Healthy Development, Says Okorocha

Umeh’s Removal As APGA Chairman Healthy Development, Says Okorocha
Okorocha vs UmehGovernor Rochas Okorocha of Imo state yesterday described the sack of the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) National Chairman, Chief Victor Umeh by an Abuja High Court as a healthy development for the nation’s democracy.
He said the judgment was a further proof of the divine mandate given to him by the people of the state and his decision to lead the South-East to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Okorocha, who spoke at the Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport, Owerri, the Imo State capital shortly after his arrival from a two-week vacation in the USA, said that nothing could be more rewarding than the sack of Mr. Umeh.
He said: “You will recall that a few months ago, APGA threatened to go to court to recover their mandate from me, and suddenly their chairman was sacked. How best can you describe the development but to say it is divine? For me, that is democracy in action”.
The Governor, who addressed a mammoth crowd of party supporters that thronged the airport to receive him, said that the nation’s democracy is on course, adding that the 2015 general elections will be free and fair.
“Nigerians should not be afraid that any of the institutions will be used to rig elections. We are Nigerians, INEC can be talked to. The Army can be talked to.
“It will be foolhardy to take sides when they don’t know who will win the election. We want to assure Nigerians that the sham that happened in Anambra can never happen again”.
Okorocha also expressed dismay over the non-appointment of anyone from the South-East region as one of the service chiefs following the removal of the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Azubuike Ihejirika, an indigene of Abia State and two other Service Chiefs on Thursday.

APGA Leadership Crisis: Okwu Extends Olive Branch To Umeh

APGA Leadership Crisis: Okwu Extends Olive Branch To Umeh
apgaFollowing Wednesday’s judgment by a Federal High Court in Abuja which recognized him as the authentic national chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, Chief Maxi Okwu has extended an olive branch to his main rival, Victor Umeh.
It would be recalled that Justice Abdul Kafarati of the Federal High Court Abuja on Wednesday delivered judgement on Suit No: FHC / ABJ/CS/563/2013 between Mr. Okwu and four others. The defendants were Mr. Umeh, his former deputy, Sani Shinkafi, and the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC. Judge Kafarati ruled that Mr. Okwu and not Mr. Umeh ought to be the authentic chairman of APGA; a ruling Mr. Umeh has since appealed.
Mr. Okwu in a statement Friday said the judgment was another opportunity for the party to re-discover its soul and look to the future with optimism.
“We give all glory and thanks to God Almighty for this opportunity. We do not claim victory and no one has been vanquished”, he said.
Mr. Okwu also called on members of the party to henceforth desist from unnecessary litigation, adding that no party could make headway when it is bogged down by incessant, protracted, intra-party dissension and litigation.
“With this re-confirmation of our leadership, we shall reactivate with greater vigour our re-engineering and re-branding of APGA by completing in the first instance, the three Rs: rapprochement, reconciliation and re-integration of aggrieved members of our great party”, he said.
He also pledged that APGA would lead the third political force for the 2015 general election.
“Once again, as I have always done in each opportunity to extend an olive branch and a right hand of comradeship to our erstwhile National Chairman, Chief Victor Umeh. We are prepared to meet with him without pre-condition at Enugu where APGA was first launched at his convenience”, Mr. Okwu said.

Tukur’s Voluntary Resignation A Proof Of Our Political Maturity, Says PDP

Tukur’s Voluntary Resignation A Proof Of Our Political Maturity, Says PDP

PRESIDENT GOODLUCK JONATHAN HOLDING ENVELOPE CONTAINING BAMANGA TUKUR'S RESIGNATION LETTER ON THURSDAY
PRESIDENT GOODLUCK JONATHAN HOLDING ENVELOPE CONTAINING BAMANGA TUKUR’S RESIGNATION LETTER ON THURSDAY
The ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has described the voluntary resignation of its former National Chairman, Bamanga Tukur, and the peaceful resolution of its leadership challenges as the height of political maturity and another eloquent expression of the internal democratic mechanism that forms the party.
A statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Olisa Metuh, said the development, which came against the backdrop of doomsday predictions by the opposition, had again show-cased the in-built conflict resolution capacity of the party.
“On Thursday, the selfless efforts of our leaders to re-engineer and strengthen our great party peaked with the selfless example of our former National Chairman, Dr. Bamanga Tukur, who voluntarily resigned. It was a denouement which brought to the fore, the unimpeachable democratic features of the PDP as a political party whose leaders and members are at all times willing to sacrifice personal interests in the overall good of the party and the nation. This is a true character of a political party attuned to the essentials of progress and national unity”, the statement said.
It also said the development had re-affirmed the capacity of the PDP to internally resolve all its challenges and by extension hold Nigeria together.
“By this very development also, we re-established with emphasis that the interest of the people is primary to every consideration in our party and that no amount of sacrifice is inconceivable in service to Nigeria”, the party said.
The statement noted that the peaceful manner with which the ruling party had continued to resolve its problems was an assurance that the challenges currently facing Nigeria would equally be surmounted.
“We therefore wish to send a fresh clear signal to the opposition and detractors who must be hugely disappointed with the outcome of our National Executive Committee meeting that the PDP has come to stay and shall continue to win elections, having been deeply rooted in the province of the people”, it said.
The statement declared that the party had shown a perfect example for the present and future generation of politicians to copy, adding that the greatness of any political party was not only a function of its numerical strength and diversity, but the patriotism of its leaders, the relegation of personal interests and the supremacy of the will of the people.
The statement, therefore, applauded Mr. Tukur for his determination to push through his ideals on the reform of the PDP, and paid tribute to the “wise and unbiased” disposition of President Goodluck Jonathan and other leaders of the party in resolving all party challenges.
It also assured Nigerians that the PDP would continue to be united so as to give all the needed support to the efforts of government to transform Nigeria and improve the living conditions of the people.
