Arik Stowaway Teenager: Family Crisis Unfolded

Controversy rises as Mr.
Osaigbovo Oikhena, the
father of 13-year-old
Arik stowaway teen, Ricky Daniel,
claimed he did not abandon his family,
while the mother, Mrs. Evelyn Oikhena,
has revealed how her husband left her
when she ran into financial problems.
Mrs. Evelyn who has vowed never to
reconcile with her husband, disclosed
that she separated from her husband
over one year as a result of incessant
beatings as well as her indebtedness to
Lift Above Poverty Organization (LAPO),
a micro-finance bank.
According to Daniel's mum trouble
started when robbers attacked and
robbed her on her business trip from
Koko town, in Warri North Local
Government Area of Delta state,
sometimes last year, following which he
could no longer repay the LAPO loan.
Mrs. Evelyn, whose son was returned
home on September 3, 2013, Tuesday,
further disclosed that due to the severe
beatings she received from her husband,
she suffered defect in one of her eyes,
which has affected her eyesight.
She also disclosed when she reported to
her husband that their son was missing,
his only response was that, "I should go
and look for his son for him," but that
the husband and his family members
have been disturbing her with several
calls on hearing that her son has been
given scholarship by Rauf Aregbesola
foundation.
"We separated over one year now. We
separated because of the problem I had
with LAPO. I was robbed on my way
from business trip to Koko market in
Delta State. I always go to the market to
buy goods.
"I also had defect in one of my eyes that
affected my vision at the moment. I
cannot see with one of my eyes at the
moment due to incessant beaten I
received from him. The question you
people should ask him is whether he
knows the private school Daniel was
attending before I transferred him to
public school at Ogbe.
"He has since abandoned us. He and his
family have been disturbing me with
several calls since they heard that Daniel
has been given scholarship. My son has
also told the governor and SSS that he
doesn't want to see his father. My
husband is currently staying in his
mother house," she said.
Mr. Osaigbovo Oikhena, from Ora
community in Owan West local
government of Edo state had in an
interview with newsmen at
government house Tuesday denied that
he has separated from his wife.
Oikhena who claimed that he was still
responsible for the upkeep and the
education of his four children, added that
they decided to stay apart when his wife
refused to move in with him due to
quarrels they had last year.
He said that they both went to the police
station at Evbuotubu police station to lay
a formal complain where they were not
seen the boy at home.
Nothing was heard of Mr. Oikhena until
last Tuesday when he suddenly
resurfaced at the Edo State Government
House when the state governor, Adams
Oshiomhole, was to hold a meeting with
the state Director of State Security
Service (SSS), Mr. Bello Bakori, officials of
the state ministry of women affairs and social development as well as Ricky Daniel and his mother.

EVIL: Gunmen Murder Father And Son In Plateau State, Mother Injured

A man and his son lost their lives to
brute gunmen at Tanchol settlement of Gyel District in Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State.
Another child, who sustained injuries, reportedly died in the hospital on Wednesday. A witness said the attackers injured the wife of the deceased and the other child that later died in the hospital.
He said the injured persons were
hospitalized in a private hospital in
Bukuru, headquarters of the council. The Plateau State Commissioner of Information, Yiljap Abraham, in a press
briefing on Wednesday said the woman was in a critical condition at the hospital.
Confirming the incident to journalists on Wednesday at the force headquarters in Jos, the Plateau State Commissioner of
Police, Chris Olakpe, said the command has dispatched senior officers to fish out the perpetrators. "Two persons lost their
lives in the attack, we have already setup a high power delegation to investigate the killing," he said.
The police chief said the team is "led by a senior crime police expert." He also explained that the police had begun investigating the recent upsurge in attacks in the state, although no arrests
have been made. "A team of police
officers has been assigned to investigate the incessant attacks," he said.
The police commissioner attributed the renewed attacks to reported cases of alleged cattle rustling in some parts of the state. Mr. Olakpe appealed to Plateau residents to engage in neighbourhood watch of their vicinities and report suspicious movements.
"I implore everyone to be on the lookout for these attackers," he said. "Security checks should be a collective responsibility of all; it should not be left in the hands of security officials alone."
At least 16 people have been killed in the last two weeks in various Plateau councils without any arrest by security agencies.
Mr. Olakpe said a meeting of stakeholders and religious heads including Aldo's [leaders of Fulani's] in the state will be held at the weekend, at the instance of the police to discuss the renewed attacks.

ASUU STRIKE: FG Calls University Lecturers to Be Realistic

The Federal Government on September 4, 2013,
Wednesday, rebuked university lecturers, ASUU, over their
ongoing indefinite strike.
Mr. Labaran Maku, the Minister of
Information, announced the
government's attitude to the strike while speaking to the reporters on September 4, 2013, Wednesday, after the weekly meeting of the Executive Council of the Federation, FEC, in Abuja.
"This country belongs to all of us, if we all insist that every sector problem must be completely solved, we will down tools we
will not work, then the country will stop working," he said.
The Minister of Information also pointed out that if all the sectors of government decide to down their tools until all their problems are solved, the country would shut down.
Mr. Labaran Maku insisted that the
Government implements a 2009
agreement it had with the Union.
"We are partners with ASUU, we are
friends. They are our patriots and we understand the critical role that the universities teachers are doing to create a new society that we are hoping to have.
"But at the same time, this is a reality question that we need to look at and we have to put the nation first " he said.
The Minister also said the Federal
Government has spent a lot on the
development of tertiary education across the country, appealed to the lecturers to have a rethink on its demands by considering the fact that there are many other competing demands from other sectors.
He said outside of security, education is one of the sectors the government had expended a lot of money on.

"I know all of us desire more from the system but the truth is that there are limitations and from the limitations we have, we believe that ASUU really needs to do rethink and ensure that we reopen our universities because really we are feeling the pain of our children being at home and this indeed is completely avoidable," he said.
"Don't forget that in 2010 we announced a 53.4 per cent increase on public
salaries across board which affected all people in the public service that has still left a huge deficit in the annual budget of the country.
"I just want to say that it is unfortunate that our students are still at home. It is very sad because the federal government has done so much in the last three years for education."
