Police rescue 16 from ritual killing site in Oyo state

Soka - Police rescued 16 people from an underground dungeon believed to be a ritual killing site, Leadership reported.

The officers also discovered several decomposing bodies and body parts, hundreds of human skulls, old clothes, photographs and voter cards in the chamber located in a forest near Soka in Oyo state.

Police found pools of blood in a nearby building where the captives were allegedly slaughtered and from where their body parts were sold for medicinal purposes, according to Oyo state police spokesperson Olabisi Clet-Ilobanafor.

The rescued men and women were too weak to immediately give evidence but several arrests were made, she said.

Every year, hundreds of Nigerians lose their lives to ritual killings. Their body parts are sold for large sums of money to people who believe they will become more powerful through magical potions containing human flesh and blood.

Boko Haram claim 17 more lives in Borno

Kano - At least 17 people have been killed by an explosion in a village market in Borno state in an attack blamed on Boko Haram Islamists, a local police chief said on Sunday.
The deadly blast struck a busy marketplace late on Thursday in the remote village of Nguro-Soye, Borno state, injuring many more, said police chief Lawan Tanko.
News on the attack was slow to emerge after insurgents destroyed nearby telecom towers, shutting down communications in the area.
"An explosion in the market in Nguro-Soye killed 17 people," Tanko told AFP, adding that police were investigating the source of the explosion.
"The attack on Nguro-Soye, as in previous attacks, is the handiwork of Boko Haram insurgents."
Residents who fled the village to the state capital Maiduguri put the death toll at nearly 30, and said more people were hurt.
"They (attackers) fired RPG (rocket-propelled grenade) on the market and opened fire, killing 29 people," said local trader Hamisu Ibrahim.
"Many people were injured in the attack and the stampede that followed," said Ibrahim.
Nguro-Soye lies close to the town of Bama where 60 people were killed last month in coordinated bomb and gun attacks by Boko Haram that burnt half the town.
Deadly attacks blamed on the sect have intensified since the turn of the year, making it one of the bloodiest since the insurgency began in 2009.
So far in 2014 some 700 people have been killed in more than 40 incidents, according to Human Rights Watch.
"There is an ongoing military operation in the area (Borno) against the group and the attack was likely in frustration over their losses," Tanko said.
"It is not established whether the attack explosion at the market which killed 17 people was as a result of planted IED (improvised explosive device) or RPG."

Army Moves To Stop Terrorists From Regrouping And Erase Threat Once And For Al

Nigerian Army soldiers have launched pre-emptive plans to block Boko Haram insurgents from escaping to Gombe, Bauchi and Taraba states.
All military formations in the three states have been put on the alert to be on the lookout for any fleeing insurgents to prevent any attempts to regroup.
The military authority has also concluded plans to fly wounded officers and soldiers in Borno State abroad for referral treatment. Some hospitals in Borno State and adjoining states are already treating the injured.
A military source, who spoke in confidence, said the incursions made by troops in the last two weeks have left the insurgents in disarray.
"From attacks and counter-attacks against the insurgents in the last two weeks, it is typically a war situation as earlier stated by the Governor of Borno State, Alhaji Kashim Shettima," a military source disclosed.
"The insurgents had been attempting to flee to the neighbouring states of Jalingo, Gombe and Bauchi to go and regroup. This is their usual technique.
"There is no more hiding place for these insurgents until they are routed out from their enclaves.
"It is purely an insurgency and not any religious war which must be curtailed once and for all."
The source said volunteers known as the civilian JTF have been doing well in helping to provide information in the zone and the state.
It was also learnt that the troops are also monitoring all market days in Borno and Yobe States where the insurgents get food supply.
The source added: "On each market day, there are usually flurries of attacks because the insurgents usually come to get food stuffs to re-stock. We want to cut the sources of their food supply. If it means shutting down these markets, we will do so. The only challenge we are having is that we do not want the innocent civilian population to suffer."
Meanwhile, one of the sources lamented that local hospitals are full of injured officers (majors, colonels and captains) with various degrees of injuries, but no adequate care is neither provided for them nor their families. The source called on the military authority to take appropriate actions,
In his response, the spokesman for Defence Headquarters, Maj-Gen. Chris Olukolade, said: "The Chief of Defence Staff, Air Chief Marshal Alex Badeh, and the service chiefs have placed premium on health care for the injured.
"In fact, the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Kenneth Minimah on Saturday addressed the troops and assured them that all those injured or wounded who need referral service abroad will be accorded same. Lt. Gen. Minimah said irrespective of status all those wounded would be given full medical attention."

Decomposed Bodies, Human Bones, Kidnapped Persons Discovered In Ibadan "Dungeon Of Death"

A dungeon where scores of kidnapped people had been tortured and died was discovered at the Soka area, a satellite community of Ibadan, along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway of Oyo State.
According to sources, human skulls, decomposed bodies and various body parts were seen being evacuated from the dungeon.
Littered all over the grounds were identity cards (apparently belonging to the victims), as well as discarded clothes and shoes.
About six guns and several cutlasses were also recovered from the house beside it said to belong to Black Horse Plastic factory.
A derelict factory building in the area was suspected to be where the captives were slaughtered and their body parts sold, as suggested by bloodstains on the floor and what could have been wooden slaughter slabs.
About 18 emaciated males and five females, chained on their legs, were also freed from captivity in the site.
Among the captives freed from the gory abode of horror was an aged woman, who was kidnapped and kept in the dungeon since 2008. Another female captive, who allegedly delivered a baby early Saturday only to see it being sold away, was also released. Asked how she found herself in the area, she managed to utter a few words and then fainted. There were also about nine captives lying on the ground, too weak to speak.
More skulls, bones and human body parts were discovered in the neighbouring bush. Also discovered were open graves with dumped bodies.
It was gathered that the forest was a market of sorts for human parts with buyers visiting the area at night. Eyewitness accounts confirmed that many high-profile people usually patronised the area especially at night.
When contacted, the Oyo State Police Command spokesperson, Mrs Olabisi Clet-Ilobanafor said some arrests were made Saturday, but the prime suspect is still at large. The police spokesperson also said some security personnel have been detailed to cordon off the scene to prevent people from taking the law into their hands.
Reacting to the story when contacted, the chairman of Oluyole Local Government, Prince Abass Alesinloye said he had already called the attention of the Special Adviser to the governor on Security Matters to the matter.
The local government chairman also said he had made arrangement that the rescued victims be taken to the hospital for prompt medical attention.

The traditional marriage ceremony was a flamboyant affair which was held in grand style, and the city of Port Harcourt stood still for the event. Paul and Anita were evidently elated as they became husband and wife.
The ceremony, which was anchored by an the lively Julius Agwu, made history as the first ever Nigerian musician's wedding to be aired live on Television, as Hip TV was given exclusive rights to cover the wedding. The after-party, which held at the same venue, saw all the attending musicians mount the stage to perform some of their hit songs.
From the beautifully dressed guests to the exquisitely decorated hall to the various meals and great entertainment from the standby 'Sharp Band', it was indeed a spectacular ceremony that will be remembered for quite some time. Check out the photos below!

How My Wife Intimidated Me Into Marrying Her - Charly Boy Opens Up

There's nothing as loving as seeing a marriage stand the test of time especially that of a celebrity.
Controversial public figure, Charles Oputa a.k.a Charly Boy has been married to his wife Diane aka Lady D for over 35 years and despite the storms of cultural boundaries, their love is still growing strong.
In a recent interview Charly boy revealed that he was intimated into marriage by his wife.
On how he met his wife, Charly boy revealed that he met her in 1974/1975 in a hair saloon in Boston, USA, he invited her out and she accepted and that's how it started.
On his parents reaction to marrying someone from a different cultural background:
My parents had met her several times in Boston. I didn’t know she was going to be my wife. I wanted to marry a Nigerian and not an American. But she was all over me, and when I wanted to return to Nigeria in 1980/1981, she bought her own ticket under the guise that she was coming to spend two weeks in Nigeria, only for her to end up spending six months.
So, my parents were worried that she should go back to her country to give me chance to look for a wife. She was supposed to book for a ticket to return to America. One day, she woke up and said to me: “Marry me or I will never come back to Nigeria.” That was how I was intimidated into marrying her. I didn’t propose to her, rather she was the one who proposed to me. That ‘s why I said I was intimidated into marrying her.
Speaking on his 35 years of marriage, he said its like a moving coaster.
"Sometimes, it’s good, at other times, it’s averagely good. We have had our issues, but, above every other thing, I think we have great understanding and respect for each other; love and trust for each other. Also, we were willing to work out anything that will keep us together. That’s why I think we have come this far," adding that the strength of their marriage is great understanding, mutual respect and a lot of communication.

APC Condemns Jonathan For Avoidning Yobe State And Embarking On Foreign Trips, Campaign Rallies

The All Progressives Congress have condemned President Goodluck Jonathan for embarking on "needless" foreign trips and "campaign rallies" in other states instead of visiting Yobe State, as nearly a month has passed since schoolchildren were killed by Boko Haram.
In a statement issued in Lagos on Sunday by its Interim National Publicity Secretary, Lai Mohanmed, the party reminded the president that he has not yet visited Yobe state to commiserate with the government and the bereaved families.
The party said Mr. Jonathan's refusal to do so shows "insensitivity" and provides a morale booster for the insurgents who attacked the students.
The party said as the father of the nation and commander-in-chief of the armed forces, Mr. Jonathan need not be afraid to visit any part of the country for whatever reasons.
The APC said since the president's planned return from his latest trip abroad on Tuesday coincides with the first month of the killings, he should fly straight to Yobe State.
The party reminded the president that since the killings, he has hosted a wasteful centennial celebration, travelled across Nigeria to illegally kick-start his campaign for the 2015 elections and journeyed to Namibia, Italy and The Netherlands in a needless junketing that belies the massive security problems facing the country.
"Mr. President, charity begins at home. You cannot be engaging in photo-ops abroad when your country is burning," the party said.
"In this case, President Jonathan's pointed avoidance of Yobe, where the death of innocent school children highlights the senseless nature of the Boko Haram insurgency, is a morale booster of sorts to the cowards who murdered those children.
"If, however, the President has any reason why he does not want to visit the scene of the gruesome murders to commiserate with the bereaved families, he should tell Nigerians who have continued to wonder why he has been avoiding the state," the party's statement concluded.
