NANS Declares 7-Days Mourning For Lost Officials

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) on Friday declared seven-day mourning for five of its officers who lost their lives to a road accident on Thursday.
The NANS President, Mr Yinka Gbadebo, told reporters in Lagos that the mourning would be observed as from Monday.
The NANS Senate President, Mr Donald Onukaogu, and four others died at Ariam-Ndioru Junction on the Umuahia-Ikot Ekpene Road, on their way to Uyo on an official mission.
Four of the victims died on the spot, while one died on the way to a hospital. The accident involved a truck and a mini-bus belonging to NANS.
Gbadebo noted that the students were on their way to the University of Uyo to intervene in a crisis that erupted in the school.
Gbadebo said that he was to be part of the NANS contingent to Uyo but had to step down to be able to attend another official assignment.
He said that the union would work in conjunction with the families of the dead officers for their burial, since they died in the course of duty.
Gbadebo regretted that more than 25 Nigerian students had lost their lives this year to unrest in higher institutions of learning. (NAN)

Government Plans To Ban smoking in Nigeria

The Federal Governmenthas said it was determined to ban smoking in Nigeria.
Minister of Health, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu, said thisin Abuja yesterday at the Ministerial Platform where he briefed the media on his two-year leadership of the ministry.
He said smokers would look for where they will continue to smoke should the Anti-Tobacco Bill at the National Assembly is passed into law.
The minister, who has, in recent weeks, been emphasising on the need to ban public smoking in the country, said the Federal Government could no longer condone smoking as he asked rhetorically: "Why are you smoking? Why are you taking what will kill you? What benefit do you derive from smoking? You may continue to smoke, but not in this country."
He listed his achievements in the ministry to include the establishment of the National Trauma Centres in the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital and the National Hospital, Abuja; the completion of the Federal Staff Hospital, Jabi, Abuja; completion of laboratory and administrative building of the NigerianInstitute of Pharmaceutical Research and Development, NIPRD, Abuja, and the rehabilitation and equipping of several teaching hospitals in the country.
Chukwu noted that President Jonathan doubled the funding of polio eradication activities to N4.7billion and in 2013 made a further commitment of N2.5billion witha Presidential Task Force on Polio Eradication constituted to help in the fight against the disease.
"Today, in Nigeria, seven of our teaching hospitals can do kidney transplant.

This month, we are expecting the International Certification Team on the Elimination of Guinea Worm in Nigeria," the minister said. He also informed that there would be a presidential summit on health coverage in the country, soon.
In his contribution, Minister of State for Health, Dr Ali Pate, said
the 'Save-One- Million-Lives' project recently launched by the President would help save more than the target figure as according to him, the logistics, professionals and infrastructure on ground in the country would help achieve the result. "Maternal mortality dropped by 50 percent between 2009 and 2012," he said.
Pate added that 25 cases of polio were recorded since January this year, which he said was as a result of the security challenges in Yobe and Borno States, where the cases were reported.

“I Am Not A Sex Symbol” -tiwa Savage

I Am Not A Sex Symbol -tiwa Savage id=

Beautiful Songstress, Tiwa Savage in an interview talks about her humble beginning and why she waited so long to release her debut album.
But one of the most buzzed about headlines is Tiwa’s response to being a sex symbol. “If you ask my family, I am not like that. I am a laid-back person”, she tells the publication.

Tiwa didn’t shy away from speaking on her fiancé. She spoke on why she wrote a song for him “You know the culture here. If you’re not married and just focus on your career, people would start asking questions. He understood my journey; he was able to push me career-wise and he encourages me alot. So, I had to do a song for him.”

Excerpts

On why it took 2 years to drop her debut album –
This album is from my heart and it’s something that I worked so long for. A lot of people wondered why it took so longand that’s because we had to go through a lot of legal processes to clear some of the samples that we used andthat took months. Also, we wanted to work with some not able producers like Warren ‘Oak’ Felder who worked with Nicki Minaj and Rihanna. So, we had to work round their schedules and that’s why it took so long.

This is an album that I don’t want to be the usual Nigerian album with patchy tracks from beginning to end. I want it to have a meaning.

On competition with female singers –
Why should I be scared of competition? Like I said on stage, you have Nicki Minaj, Rihanna, Beyonce, Kelly Rowland and they’re all female artistes and they’re all big stars in the US. Why should it be only one person that will be known for quality music among female singers in Nigeria? I am actually glad that more female artistes are coming up.

On fond memories of Isale Eko days –
Growing up, I was like a tomboy. Back then, I didn’t care about make-up or bags or shoes, I was very free.I had a very healthy upbringing.
My parents made sure I was really grounded. I had loving brothers and I remember playing around all the time when I was a kid.

On what stardom has changed about her –
I was a little more out-going but I am now a bit more reserved. Some people like saying they haven’t changed a bit when they start making more money, but that’s a lie. I think you change because you’re more wary. You want to be careful and trust less easily.

I think people around me have changed too. They expect more. I’m under a microscope always. I might make a normal mistake but it will get blown up because it’s Tiwa Savage. So, I am more wary of what I do and say in public than I was before.
