2013 the worst year, says opposition

Abuja - As 2013 draws to an end,
the opposition All Progressive
Congress described the year as
the “worst” for citizens.

Interim National Publicity
Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed,
felt for the citizenry, which the
government he said had
pauperized and dehumanized amid an unprecedented fall in the
standard of living.

“They say President Goodluck
Jonathan's achievement in 2013 is
unprecedented, yet Nigerians
celebrated the Christmas and New
Year holidays in unprecedented
pitch darkness and an
unprecedented number of our
youths are unemployed.

They say
they are winning the war against
corruption, yet key government
officials, including the so-called
Coordinating Minister of the
Economy, do not even know how
much Nigeria earns from crude oil
and gas sales, and what happened
to US$ 12 billion earned from
domestic crude lifting. They are so
eager to cling to any straw of
'achievement' that they are
celebrating the revival of the
locomotive engine in the 21st
century,” said Mohammed.

Such is the alleged insensitivity
and “total lack of compassion” for
human beings that the Jonathan
administration would reportedly
spend the nation's scarce
resources on importing animals
for the villa zoo and on purchasing
presidential jets that they do not
need, argued Mohammed.

“Because this government has
become numb to reason; because
this government has deteriorated
from cluelessness to hopelessness
and because this government has
totally lost any sense of direction,
we say it is time for Nigerians to
gird their loins and join hands
with all those who are seeking
genuine change. To adapt
Mahatma Gandhi's timeless quote,
Nigerians must be the change they
wish to see in their country, and
the year 2014 must be our Year of
Change!'' Mohammed said.

APC Moves To Reconcile Warring Members In The States

Determined to ensure that no
internal rancour splits its ranks,
the reconciliation committee of
the All Progressives Congress
(APC) headed by Alhaji Abubakar
Baraje, has commenced the
process of reconciling the warring
parties in the five states, where
the G-7 governors are locked in a
supremacy battle with local
leaders of the party..

It was gathered that as part of the
party’s effort to harmonise its
affairs at the state level, the
leadership has approved the
inauguration of interim state
executives.

The party, at its last meeting in
Abuja, gave approvals for all the
zonal chairmen to immediately
inaugurate the interim state
executives and for them to
commence mobilisation for new
members. It also proposed a plan
to hold the party’s congresses in
January 2014.

Following a directive to the
committee by the interim national
executive of the party to
commence action immediately
after the Christmas holiday, the
seven-man reconciliation
committee has decided to look
into the protest letter submitted
by some stakeholders in Kano
State.

A source said yesterday that the
Baraje committee had concluded
plans to begin the peace-building
initiatives with a visit to Kano
where they hope to broker a
peace meeting between Governor
Rabiu Kwakwanso and his
predecessor, Mallam Ibrahim
Shekarau.

At its last meeting in Abuja, the
APC interim National Executive
Committee Chairman, Chief Bisi
Akande, had announced the
setting up of the reconciliation
committee to look into the crisis
rocking the five states.

PDP challenges Anambra poll outcome

Abuja - The People’s Democratic
Party (PDP) is in support of its
candidate, Tony Nwoye, who is
challenging the results if the
November 16 Anambra
governorship election.

Willie Obiano, the All Progressives
Grand Alliance candidate, was
recently declared the winner
following what some parties
described as a shambolic poll.

“The NWC is therefore in total
support of the suit filed by its
candidate, in the November 16,
2013 Anambra governorship
election,” the National Publicity
Secretary of the party Chief Olisa
Metuh, stated.

He described the action of the
candidate as a “step in the right
direction and an acceptance of the
directive of the National Working
Committee earlier communicated
to him to pursue the mandate in
accordance with established
democratic procedures and rules.”

“The PDP is totally committed to
democracy and electoral
processes as stipulated by the
constitution and laws of our land.

"This explains why we remained
steadfast to the processes
outlined for the Anambra
governorship election and the
reason for our earlier stand and
directive to our candidate and
members to participate in the
Supplementary Election as
directed by Independent Electoral
Commission,” Metuh added.

“As a party committed to
strengthening the institution of
democracy, we believe that due
process must be followed at all
times to allow the laws and
electoral rules run their full
courses without any interruption.

"It is in this regard that we
commend our candidate for
conforming with the ideals of our
great party in seeking redress at
the right time and through the
appropriate democratic channel,”
Metuh stated.
He expressed optimism justice
would prevail.

Meanwhile, Metuh urged the
people of Anambra state to resist
alleged violence by another
opposition, the All People’s
Congress (APC).

“(APC is) turning the state into a
theatre of violence and bloodshed
typical of desperate politicians and
bad losers who do not have the
interest of the people at heart,”
lashed Metuh.

and said that that it was sad how
Sambo’s relevance was
diminishing.

The source added that the local
government chairman is APC, and
all members in the State and
National Assemblies are APC.
It would be recall that Sambo lost
all elections in his own polling unit

issues related to PDP abysmal
failure in the state and the North-

I have no political ambition for now - Al-Mustapha

Kano - Maj. Hamza Al-Mustapha,
the former Chief Security Officer
of late Gen. Sani Abacha, said on
Monday that he had no ambition
to venture into politics or seek for
political position in the country.
He made the remark while
addressing newsmen shortly after
a courtesy visit to the Emir of
Kano, Alhaji Ado Bayero, at his
palace in Kano.

“I have not decided to venture
into politics now and I have not
been invited into that direction.”
He said his recent visit to some
states, particularly troubled areas
across the country, was informed
by his desire to ensure peace and
unity.

“Many organisations and
associations actually contacted me
with invitations that took me
there. I did it with a view of
putting a helping hand.

“Right from 1984, I found it
mandatory to help associations in
support of peace and unity, and
now that God has granted me
freedom, I cannot say no.

“We have opened ground for
reconciliation to many tribes and
communities and we hope it will
add colours towards achieving
peace, unity and development in
the country,” he said.
He noted that he would continue
to respond to such calls by
organisations and associations
provided they were meant to
foster unity and peace in the

Ebonyi governor gets warning over conference remarks

Abuja - The People Democratic
Party (PDP) has distanced itself
from media report credited to
Ebonyi governor, Martins Elechi of
Ebonyi, on the proposed National
Conference.

“The attention of the National
Working Committee of the
People’s Democratic Party (PDP)
has been drawn to reports in the
media wherein the PDP was
mentioned to have commented on
an earlier report credited to
Governor Martins Elechi of Ebonyi
State on the proposed National
Conference. We wish to clarify
unequivocally that the National
Working Committee (NWC) of the
PDP never in any manner
whatsoever made or authorized
any comment on the said report.

The PDP as a well-organized
democratic institution has duly
established channel of external
communication which is carried
out with the utmost sense of
responsibility after due
clarifications on issues,” National
Publicity Secretary of the party,
Olisa Metuh, stated.

Metuh added that it was therefore
wrong and” completely
unacceptable” for anybody to
present statements made by
individuals who were not
members of the NWC of the PDP
on the said report as the official
position of the party, moreso
when such statements were made
without due clarification from the
governor.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the
entire National Working
Committee restates total
commitment and respect to all
our elected officials, especially
PDP governors who remain strong
pillars of the party. We restate our
respect for Governor Elechi who is
one of the best governors in the
country and one of the leading
lights behind the stability and
growth of not only the PDP as a
party but the institution of
democracy in Nigeria generally.”

Metuh said Elechi, whom he
described as a seasoned democrat
and statesman, played key roles in
the creation of Ebonyi state and
displayed famed political sagacity
and grassroot appeal as the PDP
South East Coordinator in the
2011general elections.

“It is therefore unacceptable to
the National Working Committee
for any person under any guise
whatsoever to make comments
that in any way ridicule or seek to
ridicule his image and portray him
in bad light. With the clarifications
made by Governor Elechi on his
remarks on the National
Conference, it is clear to all that
the comments on the statement
earlier credited to the governor
were uncalled for as he and the
National Working Committee are
indeed on the same page in
supporting the proposed National
Conference,” said Metuh.

“The National Working Committee
therefore cautions all aides of
elected officers at all levels to
desist from rushing to make
unnecessary and unprovoked
statements that tend to cast
aspersions on our elected
officials, especially State
Governors who hold the sacred
mandate of the people,
particularly when there can be
clarifications through direct
contact with their principals. All
such aides must henceforth guard
their actions and utterances and
ensure that they do not in any
way undermine the unity and
stability of the party. In the same
vein, all unauthorized persons
must also desist from making
statements in manners that
suggest such to be the official
position of the National Working
Committee on party issues.”

Delta warns aspirant leaders against violence

Abuja - Delta State Governor,
Emmanuel Uduaghan, has
dissuaded people from using
violence or fanning ethnic
sentiments to get into public
office.

The governor, speaking at a Warri
North Peoples Democratic Party
(PDP) Local Government rally, said
such actions would not yield these
politicians the desired result.

“Resorting to violence or ethnic
sentiments to achieve aspirant
office holders their goal through
force and violence does not get
anyone into office but only breeds
chaos and anarchy in society,”
Uduaghan said during the event
organised by the ruling party.

He urged the aspirants to endear
themselves to the people by their
words, deeds and actions,
reiterating that whoever will
emerge winner in an election
must do so through the ballot box
and not because of the ethnic
group they belong.
According to him, power belongs
to God Almighty.

“No matter the violence one
employed or the ethnic sentiments
resorted to, whoever God decides
emerges winner at the end of the
day,” the Delta premier said.

Silence of electorate not acceptance of defectors - Chairman

Lokoja - The Chairman of Dekina
Local Government Area of Kogi,
Mohammed Ali, said those
defecting from PDP to APC should
not mistake the current silence of
the electorate for acceptance.
Ali, who gave this warning at a
news briefing in Lokoja on
Monday, stressed that the people
would definitely react at the
appropriate time.

Ali described the defection as
unfortunate. According to him, it
is unbelievable that those who
have benefited so much from PDP
could suddenly turn their backs on
it at this time.

On the state of local governments
in the state, Ali said the 23
councils were operating under
difficult situation.

He said the unresolved problem of
ghost workers and huge monthly
wage bills were responsible for the
development which makes it
impossible for the councils to
implement people-oriented
programmes.
M
The chairman contended that the
way out was for the councils to
widen their revenue base and
remove all the ghost workers from
their pay rolls without further
delay.

He decried high wage bill of
workers, saying that the state’s
civil servants were the highest
paid in the north.

The chairman cited Ogori-
Magongo Local Government which
pays as much as N50 million per
month as workers salaries in spite
of being the smallest in the state.

political parties against imposing
candidates on the electorate.

would make parties to present
candidates chosen by the people
to contest elections.

Oga-Kana, thanked Gov. Umar Al-
Makura for appointing him into
the commission. “I want to urge
the people of the state to embrace
peace and unite, irrespective of
ethnic, religious or political
affiliation for the development of
the state and the country.”

“I want to use this medium to
reiterate the position of the
commission to conduct free, fair,
credible and acceptable election in
2014.”

“I also want to advise politicians to
play the game of politics according
to the rule; this is because the era
of imposing candidates against
the will of the electorate has
gone."

Oga-Kana also urged politicians to
properly sell themselves to the
electorate to win their votes on
Election Day.

“People should cooperate with the
electoral bodies in the country to
have free, fair credible and
acceptable elections for the
benefit of all,” he said.

Katsina State on Sunday said the
state’s Local Government elections
would be conducted in the first
quarter of 2014.

Shema who disclosed this in
Katsina at a state PDP zonal
meeting said the elections date
would be announced in January for
the political parties to begin

The governor, who was
represented by Sen. Umar Tsauri,
said all the materials needed for
the exercise were on ground.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN)
reports that the 34 local
governments in the state were
being managed by caretaker
committees.

This was as a result of the
expiration of the tenure of elected
council officials early in 2011.
“The elections will take place next
year, God willing, because
everything has been put in place,”
Shema said.

The governor called on PDP
supporters to come out en mass

He, however, admitted that the
party was facing challenges.
“We all know that PDP is facing

deceiving himself.”

“But we have been able to identify
those challenges. By identifying
the problem itself, it means half of
the challenges facing us as a party
have been solved,” the governor
said.

Shema however said PDP in the
state would continue with the
zoning and consensus principle.
He also called on party members
to woo to the party’s fold other

BOKO HARAM: In 2014 We Will Kill More, Because Allah Says We Should Decapitate, Amputate, Mutilate (VIDEO)

The leader of the Boko Haram sect, Abubakar Shekau, has appeared in a new video, promising to“decapitate and mutilate” more people in the name of Allah and ridiculing the United States for putting a bounty on his head, saying, “You can’t in any way harm me.”
Shekau, who has been dubbed a “global terrorist” by the U.S and twice been declared killed by the Nigerian military, claimed responsibility for a December 20 attack on a tank battalion barracks in Bama, Borno State.
“Brothers pulverised 21 armoured tanks. People were killed in their multitudes, bodies scattered all over,” he said, adding that his forces “blew out the brains” of soldiers who tried to hide under their blankets.
“Had Allah allowed us to eat them we would have eaten them but we are not cannibals,” he added, according to reports. “This is a victory from Allah.”
The video showed the terrorist leader seated on a mat surrounded by masked fighters. It included footage ostensibly filmed of the attack, with burning buildings and fighter jets and armed, masked men walking around them.
The insurgents stormed the barracks by arriving in a convoy of trucks shortly before sunrise, opening fire on soldiers inside before torching the compound. Witnesses said they kidnapped soldiers along with women and children.
The military has not yet released a death toll from the attack but said that more than 50 insurgents were killed when ground forces backed by fighter jets pursued them after the raid. Locals claimed they also killed an unknown number of civilians and destroyed four villages.
Shekau threatened more mayhem in the video sent to AFP on Saturday whose authenticity has not been verified, although it is one in a series sent to the news agency in which he features.
“As for killing, we will kill because Allah says we should decapitate, we should amputate limbs, we should mutilate,” he said.
He also shrugged off the bounties put on his head – $7 million by the U.S and $312,500 by the Nigerian government.
“We do not worship money. “You can’t in any way harm me.”

READ What Ex-President Of United States, George Bush Has To Say About Corruption In Nigeria

Former President of the United
States, George Bush, on Thursday
told the leadership of the country and its people to fight corruption, saying it had become the obvious challenge against its development.
Bush, who is in Lagos as a guest speaker at the Access Leadership Conference 2013, said corrupt people, no matter how highly paced, should face the wrath of
the law.

The event, which was organised by
Access Bank Plc with the theme,
'Embracing Sustainable Leadership' , attracted world leaders, including a former President of Ghana, Mr. John
Kufuor.
Bush, who commended the country for its current democratic dispensation and sustenance, said the US encouraged governments that fight corruption by giving them aids to support their
economies.

He noted that the criteria for receiving aids had been tied to countries that ensured that anti-corruption strategies were in place.

"You must apply the law, no matter how powerful somebody may be, as this encourages entrepreneurship and economic development," he added.

While calling for improved trade relations among African countries, Bush said it was in the interest of the US to encourage economic growth in vital countries like Nigeria.

Bush said, "As President of a powerful and rich nation, I think it is important to set goals and also achieve them. It is important for us to encourage and stay engaged with other world economies."

OBASANJO's LETTER TO JONATHAN: READ What Atiku Abubakar Has To Say

Former Nigeria Vice President, Atiku
Abubakar, has called on the country's leaders consulted by former President Olusegun Obasanjo before the publication of his letter to President Goodluck Jonathan which was published on Wednesday to intervene and reduce the tension created by
the weighty allegations contained in it.
In a statement issued by his media office in Abuja, the former Vice President said although he was not competent to speak on the letter because he was not privy to
the communication, he was nervous about the allegations like every other Nigerian and that those elders mentioned by Obasanjo had a moral duty
to add their voices to the issue.

According to Atiku, the allegations were too disturbing to be treated with apathy by any political stakeholder like him. He
said at a moment of national anxiety or uncertainty, leaders across the country should rise to the occasion and reassure
fellow Nigerians about the future.

He explained that at a time the rest of fthe world was looking at Nigeria as a beacon of hope for stability, the content of Obasanjo's letter should be urgently addressed by former leaders and elders.

Former Vice President Abubakar said with the attention of Nigerians focused on the 2015 elections, there was the urgent need to reassure Nigerians.

"Our priorities for Nigeria are forging lasting solutions to our chronic unemployment, providing safety and security for all, and vastly improving our failing education systems. President
Jonathan's government has consistently failed to address these critical concerns,"
Atiku said.

"That said, it is on record that I have firmly fought for a democracy where the voters choose their future leaders, not political party bosses. If the incumbent
President insists on continuing to destroy his own party with vindictive internal wars and thinks his record of rising youth
unemployment, never-ending violence, corruption and scandals is worthy of another term, then he is welcome to run.

We are confident Nigerians will exercise their democratic right to choose new leadership in 2015," he said.

The former Vice President said with the attention of Nigerians focused on the 2015 elections, there was the urgent need to reassure the people.

Atiku explained that the President was free to run his government without interference, but said sometimes even sitting Presidents needed outside constructive interventions to move the country forward.

6 Anti-Amaechi Lawmakers Sneaked Into Assembly By Police

Six anti-Amaechi members of the
Rivers state House of Assembly are
planning to hold a plenary today to
commence impeachment proceedings against the governor, fresh reports said.
The faction, which enjoys the backing of President Goodluck Jonathan and his wife, Patience, is currently developing a strategy aimed at accessing the sealed
Assembly complex to hold its sitting, the Premium Times source said.

I It was also learnt that the state police had agreed to provide cover for the lawmakers to hold their sitting.
Ahmad Muhammad, the spokesperson for the Rivers Police Command, refused either to deny or to confirm the allegation stating that he is currently in Lagos.

The leader of the lawmakers group, Evan Bipi, confirmed to journalists in a telephone interview that the meeting would take place today (Friday).

"The police are asking for the court
judgment before they will allow us
sit but I'm currently talking to
them. In a little while, lets say 10
a.m., we will proceed to the
Assembly."

"I took them to court and won so
why should they try to sit there.
That was why the police stopped
them."

At the same time the deputy speaker of the Assembly, Leyii Kwani, said to the Premium Times journalists Friday morning that his group would resist any attempt by the police to allow the group
to sit.

"We will not fold our arms and
allow them to commit illegality.
We will repeat what we did
yesterday by trying to sit too. If
the police do not allow us to enter
the Assembly, we will sit outside.
If that does not work, we will move
elsewhere to continue our sitting."
It would be recalled that the police had on Thursday disrupted a sitting of pro- Amaechi lawmakers .

UPDATE 1

Reportedly the six lawmakers have
gained entry into the sealed Rivers State House of Assembly building to
commence 'plenary'. The group, led by Evans Bipi, were sneaked into the building with the help of the police officers. It is believed the quasi-plenary has commenced.

APC Resolves Members' Differences In Sokoto State

Leadership of the All Progressives
Congress in Sokoto State said it has
commenced "reconciling" the party
members in an effort to promote the strength and unity of the APC.
Deputy National Treasurer of the APC, Usman Danmadamin-Isa, briefed the press on Thursday at a news conference in Sokoto.

"We met with Gov. Aliyu Wamakko and his members on Wednesday. All members are equal stakeholders in the party and nobody can foreclose the entry
of anybody into the party," he said.

Mr. Danmadamin-Isa said that the
efforts to reconcile the party members were aimed at ensuring a formidable and united APC in Sokoto State.

He said that the meeting with the
governor was attended by other
stalwarts of the defunct political parties that merged to form the APC.
"Governor Wamakko is the leader of the APC in Sokoto State, based on the Aminu-Masari report. The report states that whenever a governor defects to the
APC, he automatically becomes the
leader of the party."

Mr. Danmadamin-Isa said that the
party's leadership had resolved to make the APC stronger and united across the country.

"That's why we are directed to come to Sokoto to resolve the party members' differences and reconcile them," he added.

He stressed said that the APC was a
disciplined party, adding that its
members would continue to be loyal and law-abiding.

PDP Chairman Tukur Replies Obasanjo: Your Letter To Jonathan Is Attack On My Credibility!

Bamanga Tukur, the National
Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, has reacted to the former President Olusegun Obasanjo's letter to the incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan.

In the statement issued by Mr. Tukur Special Assistant on Media, Oliver Okpala, Tukur says attacking fellow elder statesmen does not portray Mr.

Obasanjo as a true democrat.
"Dr. Tukur as the national chairman and one of the founding fathers of the party can never allow his opinion or decisions
to be teleguided by an external force as a principled administrator and seasoned politician," the statement read.

Mr. Tukur described Obasanjo's letter as an "attack on the personal integrity and credibility of Dr. Tukur as an outstanding
statesman of international repute."

It will be recalled that in the 18-page letter dated December 2, 2013, and addressed to President Jonathan, Mr.Obasanjo accused the President of using
Mr. Tukur to cause multiple crises anddivide the ranks of the party.

"It would be unfair to continue to level full blame on the Chairman [Tukur] for all
that goes wrong with the party,"
Obasanjo wrote. "The chairman is playing the tune dictated by the paymaster [Jonathan]. But the paymaster is acting for a definite purpose for which deceit and deception seem to be the major
ingredients."
Mr. Tukur, in response, said it is "most unfortunate" that the former President labelled him as "Jonathan's stooge".

"For such a statement against the person of the national chairman of the PDP to come from Chief Obasanjo, a former head of states and President is most
unfortunate," Mr. Tukur said.

"Chief Obasanjo, in his position as former President under the PDP platform, should have known very well the Constitution of the party, the party manifestos as it relates to the independence of the PDP National Working Committee.

"For him to insinuate that the President is using the national chairman to cause multiple problems for the party doesn't in any way portray him as a true democrat," Tukur concluded.

Anambra: Obi Will Replace Late Ojukwu As APGA National Leader

The All Progressives Grand Alliance
(APGA) has appointed Peter Obi as its national leader and chairman of the Board of Trustees (BOT) with effect from January 2014.
This decision was announced yesterday by APGA National Chairman, Victor Umeh, after the party's National Working Committee (NWC) meeting in
Abuja. The appointment is to appreciate Obi's contributions to the APGA, Umeh said.

Obi's tenure will end on March 17, 2014.
He will be succeeded by Willie Obiano, a winner of Anambra 2013
gubernatorial poll .
APGA also thanked President Goodluck Jonathan, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), security
agencies, and Anambarians for their efforts throughout the period of the election.
Commenting Obi's alleged endorsement of Jonathan for 2015, Umeh said:

"Governor Peter Obi will be
national leader of APGA in January
2014. "2015 is still ahead of us and
when the time comes, our party of
course will do the needful. As we
did in 2011, we did not say we
were not going to run for
Presidency, when we did not have
anybody, we endorsed President
Jonathan.

"We are not hiding our support for
his administration and his
transformation agenda. So when
we come to 2015, the party will
meet as we met in 2011 to take a
decision on the presidential
election without any apology to
anybody".

Obasanjo Pays Surprise Visit to Jonathan in Nairob

President Goodluck Jonathan and former President, Olusegun Obasanjo, had breakfast together in Nairobi, Kenya, on December 12, 2013, Thursday.

Both politicians were among other
African leaders that graced the 50th
Independence Anniversary celebration of Kenya at the Safaricom Stadium in Kasarani, Nairobi, on Thursday, December
12.
Obasanjo's visit was said to have taken everybody by surprise as it contradicts the expected nature of the relationshipbbetween both men, owing to recent public criticisms of the President by
Obasanjo .

The unexpected meeting held prior to the anniversary event, as the former president, Obasanjo, paid a surprise visit to President Jonathan at the Intercontinental Hotel, Nairobi, where they had a private breakfast together.

Reports say the two politicians had a "fruitful discussion" after emerging from the meeting beaming with smiles and
sharing a warm handshake.
It would be recalled that Obasanjo had written a strong-worded letter, which went public earlier this week
(Wednesday), accusing the President of performing below par and taking actions calculated at destroying the country. The
previous meeting between Jonathan and Obasanjo was on December 10, 2013,
Tuesday, as they attended the memorial held to honor the life of Nelson "Madiba" Madela, South Africa's great man of
history and world's single most significant statesman of the last 100 years.
In his speech, President Jonathan called on all Kenyans to unite. According to him, there was no alternative to unity if Kenyans must move their nation
forward. In building their nation,
Jonathan told Kenyans that they must make unity their focal point.
He said that the destiny of Kenya lies with its people and as such, the people must strive hard to take their country to a greater height.

President Jonathan said that he was happy that former Kenya Prime Minister, Raila Odinga was present at the event and working with President Uhuru Kenyatta.
"Nobody can love you more than
Kenyans, so you all have to jointly
develop your country. All Kenyans
should come together to form an
inclusive society.
"Since 2007, many African
countries like Kenya have been
celebrating 50 years of independence and freedom, our
founding fathers talked of political
freedom to be followed by
economic freedom.
"The present generation of African
leaders must work hard on science
and technology as well as
industrialisation, so that there
could be economic development
and freedom." President Jonathan
stated.
Obasanjo was said to have sat quietly during the event and was making calls on his mobile phone at intervals while the event lasted.

PDP declares Friday work free day

Abuja - The National Working Committee (NWC) of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) has declared December 13 a work-
free day in all PDP offices across the federation.
This is contained in a statement issued invAbuja on Wednesday by Olisa Metuh, the party`s National Publicity Secretary.
He said that the day was in honour of Solomon Lar, the party's pioneer national chairman and elder statesman who was also the first executive governor of Plateau.

He said that NWC had also postponed it's weekly meeting in honour of the late Lar.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Lar, who died in a U.S hospital on October 9, would be buried on December 13, in his home town in Plateau.

The deceased PDP stalwart midwifed the formation of the party in 1998 and led it to victory in the 1999 general elections.

Lar, born in April 1933, was regarded as an emancipator of the less privileged and a politician who stood out among others.
He was also a member of the first
National Parliament when Nigeria gained independence in 1960.

The late Lar was Parliamentary Secretary to Prime Minister Abubakar Tafawa Balewa before the January 1966 coup
which brought in the military.
At the inception of the second republic, Lar was a co-founder of the Nigerian People's Party, and was nominated the party’s presidential candidate in 1978.

He later won the governorship election in Plateau and became the first executive governor of the state in 1979.

I will not resign - Tukur

Abuja - PDP National Chairman Bamanga Tukur says he will not resign his position as the party leader.
Tukur stated this in an interview with State House correspondents shortly after a closed-door meeting with Vice- President Namadi Sambo at the State House, Abuja.

He said there was no basis for him to resign his position, arguing that ''I am the best thing that has happened to the party''.
It will be recalled that one of the
demands of the G-7 PDP Governors
before the defection of five of them to the All Progressives Congress (APC), was for Tukur to relinquish his position.
The aggrieved governors accused Tukur of high-handedness in the piloting of the affairs of the party.

But Tukur told the newsmen that he was not moved by the various accusations levelled against him by both the G7 governors and members of the other
opposition parties.
"They even said that I am a virus. Yes, I agree that I am virus, but a virus for discipline; a virus for good governance; virus for positive change; and virus for all
things that are good
"Do you resign when you know that you are doing good things or do you resign simply because a few people are angry that you are doing positive things and
they are not comfortable with such good things.’’
Tukur said that the party leadership would
continue to talk to the aggrieved
governors and other members of the party.
"Even in your home, if your wife run away, you would always look for ways ofctalking to her hoping that she would see reason and return home," he said.

The presidency slams ex-president's 'reckless' accusations

Abuja - The presidency on Wednesday hit back at criticism by former president Olusegun Obasanjo, describing his widely
leaked letter accusing Goodluck Jonathan of leadership failures as "indecorous" and "reckless".
Presidential spokesman Reuben Abati said in a statement that Obasanjo's letter to President Jonathan was deliberately
leaked to the media in an effort to "to impugn the integrity of the president".
In the 18-page missive, the former head of state -- who ruled from 1999 to 2007 -- accuses Jonathan of failing to tackle a litany of problems, from corruption to
piracy, kidnapping and oil theft.

He also takes the president to task over party infighting and a crackdown on dissenters.
"I want nothing from you personally
except that you should run the affairs of Nigeria not only to make Nigeria good, but to make Nigeria great for which I have always pleaded with you and I will
always do so. And it is yet to be done for most Nigerians to see," Obasanjo wrote.
He added that he was speaking out
because he felt the country was heading in the wrong direction.
"I could sense a semblance between the situation that we are gradually getting into and the situation we fell into as a
nation during the Abacha era," he said.
Sani Abacha, a dictator in power from 1993 to 1998 when he died, ruled Nigeria with an iron fist, jailing and driving his critics into exile. Abacha's regime jailed
Obasanjo and several others for his
alleged involvement in a failed coup plotin 1995.
Abati said Jonathan would in due time respond to the letter and "the most reckless, baseless, unjustifiable and indecorous charges levied against him and
his administration".

He added that it was "highly unbecoming, mischievous and provocative" that the letter was "deliberately leaked to the
mass media in a deplorable effort to impugn the integrity of the president and denigrate his commitment to giving Nigeria the best possible leadership".

Obasanjo contested and won elections in 1999 and 2003 on the platform of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, now
enmeshed in crisis.
He guided his chosen successor Musa Yar'Adua to an election win in 2007 and still holds huge sway in Nigerian politics.
Yar'Adua died in office and was succeeded by Jonathan.

Abia governor boasts of achieving campaign promises

Abia governor boasts of achieving
campaign promises
Umuahia - Governor Theodore Orji of Abia said on Wednesday that he had accomplished “all major promises” made during his electioneering campaigns to
the people of the state.
Orji made the statement during the 2013 prayer summit organised by an Umuahia based political pressure group, Ochendo Grassroots Solidarity Movement, in
Umuahia.
He was represented by Godwin Nna, the Commissioner for Urban Renewal and Physical Planning.
Orji expressed joy that Abia now had environment that enabled key
infrastructure to drive development.
“My administration has restored peace and security through total combating of kidnapping and other criminal activities across the state. We have equally tackled
epileptic power supply, constructed
workers’ secretariat, built several roads and relocated the three major markets in Umuahia,” he said.
The governor also listed other
achievements in the area of health, youth empowerment, education and workers' welfare, noting that Abia was now closing in on other mega cities in Nigeria.

Amaechi, Jang factions converge for governors meeting

Abuja - The two factions of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) will meet in Abuja on Wednesday, Information Nigeria
reports.
The Governor Chibuike Amaechi faction has invited members of the Jonah Jang led faction to the NGF meeting.
The meeting will be held at the Rivers State Governor’s Lodge in Abuja.
The NGF has been divided following the protests of some governors, who did not
approve Amaechi's second term as
chairman of the forum.
The Rivers State governor defeated
Governor Jang of Plateau State with a slim margin of three votes during the NGF chairmanship election.

Boko Haram leader claims attack on military

Borno - Boko Haram's leader, Abubakar Shekau, has claimed responsibility for attacks on military formations in Borno
State.
Few believe the Boko Haram terrorist network has such capability despite fears
its insurgency could reach neighboring states.
In the video received Thursday, Abubakar Shekau dismisses last month's U.S. designation of his group as a terrorist organization and suggests a country that
could not stop the 9/11 attacks cannot hurt his movement.

Thousands have been killed in the
Nigerian insurgency since 2009.
The video shows burning buildings and aircraft in the December 2 attack on an air force base outside Maiduguri and warns, "Don't think we will stop in Maiduguri.
Tomorrow you will see us in America itself."

Police Invade APC’s Rally AGAIN in River, Shoot Teargas

A day after security operatives
disrupted the rally organised by the
All Progressives Congress in Obio/
Akpor area of Rivers State, the
Ikwerre Local Government chapter of the party has accused the police of invading the council headquarters during its rally on Wednesday.
According to APC allegations, the police shot teargas at party supporters, brutalised traditional rulers and law- abiding citizens in the area.
The opposition party also accused the the police of destroying canopies, chairs and public address system and seized valuables of party supporters at the rally.
Commenting on the situation to the
journalists, an APC chief in the area, Elder Chidi Wihioka, said the party had earlier informed the police in writing that the Ikwerre Local Government Chapter
of APC would be visiting wards to hold rallies and sensitise the people about the party activities.
Wihioka said,

"We had to converge on the
Ikwerre Local Government Council
to observe the arrangement of
canopies, chairs and tables before I
started getting calls here and there
by a group.
"But we decided not to get worried
because we had earlier informed
the police of holding rallies in the
various wards. We also expected a
written response from the police."
APC chief referred to the freedom of association and claimed it had been violated by the police.
He also added,

"When the Grassroots Democratic
Initiative holds its rallies,
sometimes, it is without police
permit; but it is most surprising
that the police give GDI and PDP
police permit and protection."

Morevoer, the Chairman of Ikwerre Local Government Area, Mr. Welendu Amadi,
flayed the increasing level of hostility against members of his party and law- abiding citizens in the area. The State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Ahmad Mohammad, said he had travelled
out of the state.

Danagogo.
"The Governor directs (Mr.)
Danagogo to handover immediately
to the Permanent Secretary in the
Ministry of Urban Development,"
the statement read.
Though no reason was given for the
termination of Danagogo's appointment, the sacking may be linked with the recent report that the Commissioner hadbdefected to the group loyal to the Supervising Minister of Education, Chief Nyesom Wike.

FEMALE POWER: Two Senators Declare 2015 Governorship Ambition

Two female Senators Helen Esuene (PDP Akwa Ibom South) and Aisha Al- Hassan (PDP Taraba North) declared their ambition to contest the 2015 governorship elections in their respective states.
The ladies announced their intention at a joint news conference held at the
National Assembly on December 11, 2013, Wednesday.
The Senators said they had decided to join the race for the top posts in their different states to complement the
efforts men had been making over the years in the same capacity.
They also pledged to "bring about more impactful governance on citizens of the states as far as genuine development
was concerned.".

"We are not saying we are better
than men that have been occupying
these positions over the years in
the two states and infact across
the 36 states of the federation.
"We are only saying as responsible
women, we shall be less distracted
in office like any of the men that
had served in that capacity with
attendant highly focused and
development-driven governance.
"Our efforts would no doubt take
our states to greater heights in all
ramifications," Senator Esuene said.
Senator Al-Hassan, who attributed their successes in the Senate as female lawmakers to the Almighty God and the press, solicited for more support from the press on their ambitions.

Does PDP Really Need Igbos? I'm Not Sure - Okorocha

Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo
State recently held a media chat with some journalists in the state. He she'd light on many state and national issues.

Excerpts: What would be your next
political ambition come 2015, are you going for re-election as governor or aspiring for the presidency?

Let me make this point clear that I'm a member of All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA); that is my party there is no controversy about it.
APGA still remains my cultural party
because for an Igbo man, APGA
represents a way of life, but it is not a national political party. If you may recall APGA became divided.

One APGA looked towards the side of PDP and the other that I was a member looked towards APC.
I was in APGA as political party but now I am in APC and for one reason if you may recall Action Congress of Nigeria
ACN, Congress for Progressive Change CPC, All Nigeria Peoples Party ANPP were a regional party, and all these parties came together to form a national party
to challenge PDP.
So it would sound very phony to have APGA as a regional party when others have merged for a common purpose. So the wisest thing do was to merge with
APC and the remaining APGA are in PDP.
For me APC is good for the South East because from the way political equation is structured in Nigeria, it doesn't appear to me that PDP has any plan for Ndi Igbo.
For instance, none of the positions of the President, Vice President, Senate President, Speaker of the House of Representatives, was allotted to the South East by the PDP.

As I said earlier, the best thing is to join the APC to remedy the imbalance in future. It is only wise to say that South East is better off in APC because there's
no way the positions would elude the zone if APC finds itself in government.
Again PDP has never had any stiff
opposition. This is the only time we have
a formidable opposition in the country.
And I am confident that come 2015 APC will take the day.
Asking for my political ambition in 2015, you may wish to recollect that I was once a presidential aspirant and came second in the primary that produced the
late President Umaru Musa Yar'dua. So I am not a new person in the presidential race of this country.
Actually I need your advice on what to do. Today, among all presidential aspirants, I am still a force to be reckoned with. I have a strong passion for my Imo people and my vision is of a national capacity.

Why are still not a registered member of APC, have you been refused your formal registration?

I am one of the founding members of the APC and it is not true that I have been refused registration in a party that I am a leader. It is mere speculation.
Chief Mike Ahamba (SAN) who is one of those saying that I have not been registered with the APC was a member of merging parties.

But the issue is that we in APC have not started registration yet but that may commence before the end of the year because for now all the structures for registration are in place.

Since your party has not yet zoned
the presidency to any region in the country, what does it portend for the Igbos?

Let me again say that our party APC has not zoned the presidency to anybody and does not believe in zoning.
We believe that anybody that has
something upstairs irrespective of zone rules this country because zoning does not rule a country.
Zoning has rather produced mediocrity. I think we have come of age when men must be elected into offices purely on their individual merits instead of laying
undue emphasis on where they come from.
Since the committee that probed your predecessor, Chief Ikedi Ohakim submitted its report nothing has been heard of it.
Does it mean that your government
has abandoned the project?
That is something that Nigerians should
ask questions about. I have made my
report to EFCC to inform them about the
N67 billion in question which is missing in the state coffers.
But it looks like people who are assumed to be having relationship with the presidency cannot be probed.
There have been so many cases of such bordering on many individuals in the country but because of their relationship
with the presidency both the EFCC and the ICPC have to stay clear.
There is no reason my predecessor
should not have been called to question on how he used the state funds.
I can authoritatively state that there is no single structure anywhere in this state which my immediate predecessor will
say that he did with tax payers' money.
But even at this the EFCC has continued to harass officials of my administration with invitations to answer one allegations that are baseless.
I think we have done our job and what is left now is to take it to the people's court. I do not have the organ to prosecute anybody and it is as a result of this that we have established our own organ known as Imo State Economic and Financial Crimes Commission which of course is in the pipelines and when we have it, we will be able to act.
Very soon, the nation would be
celebrating her Centenary following the 1914 historic amalgamation of the then Northern and Southern protectorates.

What is your reaction?

Our strength lies in our market and in our population. I do not support isolated calls for division or disintegration because to me, this is a "no go area" whether Nigeria should be or not to be.

I congratulate Nigerians on the forth coming Centenary celebration. Every nation on earth has its problems and so Nigeria cannot be in isolation.
Therefore the call for disintegration is neither here nor there. We are building something here in the state in commemoration of the 2014 Centenary.

What is your reaction to the just
conducted Anambra State
governorship election?

It is a monumental shock to Nigerian because even a goat noticed the glaring irregularities that trailed the polls and which even INEC shamelessly admitted.
The elections in Anambra and Delta
states are eye openers because this
nation should not be ran in this manner at all.
INEC officials were arrested and locked up in Imo.
The police, INEC and the PDP all
combined to perpetrate unprecedented electoral fraud and the slogan has always been "get the result, write it and announce it and let them go to court".
Look at what happened in the Oguta re run election in the state.

With the defeat of the APC in
Anambra, there are speculations that you might abandon the APC for another party?

I am not a respecter of party but a
respecter of vision. I have critically
examined the structure of the PDP and I want to let us know that in the next 20 years Nigeria will be in bondage if PDP retains power.
If I am given the opportunity to rule this country I will transform it in just two years.
My journey to APC is because of the way PDP is structured and no young man will ever survive in PDP.
Everybody is tired of PDP and the APC is the only way to go and I will stand for justice and fairness wherever I go.

Defected PDP Governors Will Soon Return, Begging For Forgiveness – Gulak

The Special Adviser to
President Goodluck Jonathan on Political Affairs, Alhaji
Ahmed Gulak, says the defected PDP governors are "prodigal sons" who will soon return to the fold, begging for forgiveness.

Gulak stated this as a special guest at a dinner organised by the "Goodluck Support Group (GSG)'' in New York on Wednesday.

The event was well attended by
Nigerian-Americans, congressmen and the business community.
The night also witnessed formal
inauguration of zonal coordinators of GSG with a presentation of a documentary on
"See what President Goodluck Jonathan Has Done in 2 Years''.
"Some of these governors are so
unpopular; they cannot win elections in their states, no political analysis can
show that Rotimi Amaechi can take
Rivers State to APC. It is simply
impossible that Amaechi's APC will take the votes away from the PDP whether at the governorship or presidential levels and other levels for that matter.
"In 2011, Buhari contested on the
platform of the party he formed, the CPC while ACN fielded Ribadu and they were again defeated; I assure you that we will
always defeat them and come tops,"
Gulak said.
"This is a game of politics just like what is happening here in the U.S. where the opposition shut down the government.
"They called the president all manner of names and insisted on budget cuts.
Those who jumped ship will come back again.
"Atiku left PDP for ACN and returned to the fold with profuse apology. He was
welcomed back like a prodigal son; we will welcome back our prodigal sons because out there, it is nothing but empty shelves full of mediocre," he said.
He, however, noted that no Nigerian leader had been so qualified to lead
Nigeria as Jonathan, adding that the president gave a score-card of his performance in two years.
Gulak stated that the evidence on
ground showed that the president's
transformation agenda was real.

EXCLUSIVE: Obasanjo Writes Jonathan, Accuses President Of Lying, Destroying Nigeria, Promoting Corruption

An apparently angry and frustrated
ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo
has written what clearly competes
as one of the most acerbic letters
in modern history to President
Goodluck Jonathan, accusing him of
ineptitude and of taking actions
calculated at destroying Nigeria.
“Nigeria is bleeding and the
hemorrhage must be stopped,” Mr.
Obasanjo said in the 18-page letter
dated December 2, 2013 and
exclusively obtained by PREMIUM
TIMES Tuesday.

He said Mr. Jonathan has failed to
deliver on his promises to the
Nigerian people, stem corruption,
promote national unity and
strengthen national security.

He said in the letter titled “Before
it is too late” that rather than take
steps to advance Nigeria’s interest
and up the standards of living of
Nigerians, Mr. Jonathan had
betrayed God and the Nigerian
people that brought him to power,
and has been pursuing selfish
personal and political interests
based on advice he receives from
“self-centred aides”.

In the detailed letter, dripping of
anger , frustration and what
appears a genuine concern to
rescue a nation on the brink, Mr.
Obasanjo lamented that Mr.
Jonathan had become terribly
divisive and clannish, destroying his
own party, polarizing the country
along regional and religious lines
and ridiculing Nigeria in the comity
of nations.

Without mincing words, Mr.
Obasanjo blamed Mr. Jonathan for
the crises tearing the ruling
Peoples Democratic Party, PDP,
apart.
He said apart from using party
chairman Bamanga Tukur to cause
multiple crises and divide the ranks
of the party, the president’s failure
to keep a promise he made not to
seek a second term is also
generating tension within the
ruling party.

“It would be unfair to continue to
level full blames on the Chairman
(Tukur) for all that goes wrong with
the party,” Mr. Obasanjo said. “The
chairman is playing the tune
dictated by the paymaster
(Jonathan). But the paymaster is
acting for a definitive purpose for
which deceit and deception seem
to be the major ingredients.

“Up till two months ago, Mr.
President, you told me that you
have not told anybody that you
would contest in 2015. I quickly
pointed out to you that the signs
and the measures on the ground
do not tally with your statement.

You said the same to one other
person who shared his observation
with me. And only a fool would
believe that statement you made
to me judging by what is going on.

I must say it is not ingenious. You
may wish to pursue a more
credible and more honorable
path.”
The former President said Mr.
Jonathan told him before the 2011
election he would not seek a
second term, and made the same
promise to governors, party
stakeholders and Nigerians.
The president’s refusal to keep that
promise cast him as a man without
honour, Mr. Obasanjo said.

Saying it would be “fatally morally
flawed” for Mr. Jonathan to contest
in 2015, Mr. Obasanjo added, “As a
leader, two things you must
cherish and hold dear among
others are trust and honour both of
which are important ingredients of
character. I will want to see
anyone in the Office of the
Presidency of Nigeria as a man or
woman who can be trusted, a
person of honour in his words and
character.”

Mr. Obasanjo also accused Mr.
Jonathan of anti-party conducts –
supporting opposition parties’
candidates in governorship
elections in Lagos, Ondo, Edo and
Anambra states at the detriment of
PDP’s own candidates –, and of
pitting party members against one
another.

Saying the President had failed to
address the underlying causes of
the Boko Haram menace, Mr.
Obasanjo urged Mr. Jonathan to
adopt a carrot and stick approach in dealing with the insurgency
explaining that “conventional
military actions based on standard
phases of military operations alone
will not permanently and effectively deal with the issue of
Boko Haram”.

Mr. Obasanjo also tackled Mr.
Jonathan for allegedly being
clannish. “For you to allow yourself
to be “possessed”, so to say, to the
exclusion of most of the rest of
Nigerians as an “Ijaw man” is a
mistake that should never have
been allowed to happen. Yes, you
have to be born in one part of
Nigeria to be Nigerian if not
naturalized but the Nigerian
President must be above ethnic
factionalism. And those who prop
you up as of, and for ‘Ijaw nation’
are not your friends genuinely, not
friends of Nigeria nor friends of
‘Ijaw nation’ they tout about.

“To allow or tacitly encourage
people of ‘Ijaw nation’ to throw
insults on other Nigerians from
other parts of the country and
threaten fire and brimstone to
protect your interest as an Ijaw
man is myopic and your not openly
quieting them is even more
unfortunate.

Two Ijaw men, ex-militant Mujahid
Dokubo-Asari, and a former federal
commissioner for information,
Edwin Clark, who carries himself
around as the political godfather of
the president, are known to talk
down on people opposed to the
president.
Mr. Obasanjo also accused Mr.
Jonathan of placing over 1000
Nigerians on political watch list and
“training snipers and other armed
personnel secretly and
clandestinely acquiring weapons to
match for political purposes like
Abacha and training them where
Abacha trained his killers”.

He wondered why the Presidency
was providing assistance for a
murderer to evade justice.
“Presidential assistance for a
murderer to evade justice and
presidential delegation to welcome
him home can only be in bad taste
generally but particularly to the
family of his victim,” Mr. Obasanjo
said. “Assisting criminals to evade
justice cannot be part of the job of
the presidency. Or, as it is viwed in
some quarters, is he being
recruited to do for you what he had
done for Abacha in the past?
Hopefully, he should have learned
his lesson. Let us continue to
watch.”

Mr. Obasanjo did not mention the
name of the murderer he accused
the President of protecting but he
seems to be referring to Hamza Al-
Mustapha, a former security aide to
late Head of State, General Sani
Abacha, who is facing trial for
allegedly masterminding the killing
of Kudirat Abiola, the wife of
Moshood Abiola, the winner of the
annulled 1993 presidential
election.
Mr. Al-Mustapha was freed by the
appeal court in July but the Lagos
state government has since
appealed the judgment at the
Supreme Court.

The former President also called on
the National Assembly to rise up
and take decisive action over the
recent allegation in the country
that the Nigerian National
Petroleum Corporation failed to
remit billions of dollars in proceeds
of crude oil sales to the federation
account.

“This allegation will not fly away by
non-action, cover-up, denial or
bribing possible investigators,” Mr.
Obasanjo told the President.
“Please deal with this allegation
transparently and let the truth be
known.
“The dramatis personae in this
allegation and who they are
working for will one day be public
knowledge. Those who know are
watching if the National Assembly
will not be accomplice in the
heinous crime and Unclad grand
corruption. May God grant you the
grace for at least one effective
corrective action against high
corruption which seems to stink all
around you in your government.”

Mr. Obasanjo said he wrote the
letter in the national interest,
saying nothing, at this stage of his
life, would prevent him from
standing up for whatever he
considers to be in the best interest
of Nigeria, Africa and the world.
He said he was ready for whatever
backlash his letter would provoke
from the presidency.
“Knowing what happens around you most of which you know of and
condone or deny, this letter will
proke cacophony from hired and
unhired attackers but I will
maintain my serenity because by
this letter, I have done my duty to
you as I have always done, to your
government, to the party, PDP, and
to our country, Nigeria…,” Mr.
Obasanjo said.

“I have passed the stage of being
flattered, intimidated, threatened,
frightened, induced or bought…
Death is the end of all human
beings and may it come when God
wills it to come.”
