40 Feared Killed As JTF Goes On The Offensive In Maiduguri
Over 40 people suspected to be
members of the Boko Haram sect
have been killed between Saturday
and yesterday, when operatives of
the Joint Task Force (JTF) cordoned-
off Bulabulin and Ngarnam wards as well as Bayan Quarters - three
areas believed to be sanctuaries of
the insurgents in Maiduguri,
witnesses and hospital sources
said.
JTF spkesman Lt Col Sagir Musa
confirmed that JTf forces have
secured the area but was adamant
in not revealing the amount of
casualties but he however advised
the citizens passing through the
zones should go through other
routes pending when normalcy
returns to the area.
Our correspondent reports that for
over a year, most residents of
Bulabulin, Ngarnam and parts of
Bayan Tasha (railway, close to the
house of former Boko Haram
leader, Mohammed Yusuf) have
fled their homes, a development
which security sources said
provided a fertile ground for
insurgents to stay their. Sagir said
the ongoing operation was meant
to reclaim the settlements for the
rightful owners
According to him, "in an effort to
wipe out Boko Haram terrorists
from deserted Bulabulin, Bayan
Quarters and Ngarnam, the JTF has
taken over the areas with
deployment of personnel and
equipment. "Recall that the
inhabitants of the areas were
chased out of their houses by Boko
Haram terrorists and converted
most of the houses to hideouts or
enclaves
"The latest efforts of the task force
led to the dislodgment of the
insurgents and the recovery of
arms, ammunitions, Improvised
Explosive Devices (IEDs) and some
terrorists died during an exchange
of fire with the JTF troops," Sagir
said. He stated that on Saturday
alone, troops recovered 6 RPG
bombs, one sub-machine gun, 4
AK47 rifles, 4 RPG launchers, 7
empty magazines, three army
camouflage uniforms and 2 tricycles
in some hideouts in Bulabulin
"Therefore, in furtherance of the
operation, the JTF wishes to alert
and warn members of the public
particularly those farming or
passing through the above
mentioned areas to keep away as
operation is ongoing," the JTF
spokesman said. Sources at the
State Specialist Hospital said over
25 corpses were deposited there
between Saturday and yesterday
while some people who live around
Galadima Junction and Hausari said
there are about 10 corpses at
Bulabulin and Ngarnam that are yet to to be taken away.
A resident said JTF troops used
Armoured Personnel Carriers
(APCs) to subdue the insurgents
and thereafter destroyed many
houses to pave way for searching
the areas. In another
development, the JTF had
commended what it described as
"the patriotic efforts of citizens and
residents of Borno State
particularly the youth vigilante
groups" that were determined to
assisting security agencies to defeat
Boko Haram terrorists in the state,
Lt Col Sagir, who interacted with
some youth leaders in Gwange and
Hausari areas of Maiduguri
yesterday, urged the youths to
conduct themselves within the
ambits of the law so that their
efforts will be fully appreciated by
members of the public.

FG To Generate 4,000MW Electricity From Coal
To address the country's epileptic
power supply situation, the Federal
Government has announced plans
to generate additional 4,000
megawatts of electricity from coal.
This, according to the government,
will augment the country's power
generation, which currently is a
little above 4,000MW.
The Minister of Power, Prof.
Chinedu Nebo, disclosed this in
Abuja while inaugurating an eight-
man committee on the
development of a framework for
coal to power.
He said, "The Federal Ministry of
Power and the Federal Ministry of
Mines and Steel are working
together to ensure that not only is
coal mined from our coal deposit,
but that coal is also converted to
power. When that is done, it is
most likely that these coal belts,
when utilised, can give us in excess
of 4,000 additional megawatts of
electricity.
"No nation can survive on only one
or two sources of energy. If there
is sabotage or natural disaster that
prevents one source of fuel, and if
that is the only source, then there
is problem."
The minister said it was imperative
for Nigeria to have a well balanced
energy mix, adding that in line with
global best practice, there was an
urgent need to diversify the energy
sources.
Nebo stated that most developed
countries of the world used coal as
their major source of power
generation, stressing that Nigeria's
power generation mix currently
consisted of 70 per cent production
from the thermal plants and 30 per
cent hydropower, adding that
thermal plants were entirely based
on natural gas as fuel.
According to the minister, the
country has abundant coal spread
across 13 states of the federation.
He said coal had been discovered in commercial quantities in a belt
spanning Enugu, Benue, Kogi,
Nassarawa and Gombe states.
According to the terms of refrence
given to the committee members,
a copy of which was obtained by
our correspondent, the committee
will review the status and
adequacy of available studies and
project documents relating to the
establishment of coal-fired plants.
They are to examine the
impediments and challenges to the
development of coal-fired power
plants in the country and make
recommendations to facilitate
investment in coal to power
generation, among others.
In his remarks, the Chairman of
the committee, Mr. Sanusi Garba,
gave an assurance that members
would ensure that the terms of
reference were met.

JTF Arrests Borno ANPP Chairman Over Terror Allegations
The Joint Task Force (JTF) yesterday in the crisis ridden State Bornu
confirmed that the All Nigeria People Party (ANPP) chairman Alhaji Mala Othmanis has been taken in custody heightening fear of imminent arrest of other top members of the party for alleged cooperation with the terrorrist sect Boko Haram.
Just last week a vigilante group consistingbof young Bornu state indigene's had attacked Alhaji Othman but he managed
to evade the youths but they however set his GRA residence on fire.
The Bornu State Governor Bakura
Shettima swiftly reacted to the news stating through the state secretary of the party that the arrest was nothing more than a political motivated crackdown on
ANPP.
The JTF spokesman Sagir Musa however revealed that the chairman is only being
investigated But Alhaji Umar Duhu Senior Special Assistant to former Borno State governor now ANPP BOT chairman, Ali Modu Sherriff, condemned the arrest ofbthe party chieftain. He said in Kaduna
that the arrest of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) chairman in Borno State Mala Othman over ECOMOG group was condemnable.
According to him, ECOMOG was formed as a political group and has nothing to do with the Boko Haram insurgency. "Thenpolitical youth wing named ECOMOG has
nothing to do with Boko Haram. In fact, the ECOMOG is greatly hunted by the Boko Haram members. I can vouch for Mala Othman because he is honest, clean and God fearing and did not deserve this
kind of treatment after some youth
called 'civilian JTF' burnt down his
house," Duhu said.
However, "the JTF has arrested the
chairman of the ANPP, Alhaji Mala
Othman. He is in JTF's custody
undergoing interrogation. Investigation is ongoing and the press will be accordingly
briefed at the end of the investigation,"
Sagir said, when contacted to shed light on the arrest of the party chairman.
Othman has been the ANPP chairman right from the days of former governor.Ali Modu Sheriff and observers say his arrest is a prelude to other high profile
arrests over allegations on the protracted Boko Haram crisis.
Duhu who is the
chairman of the ANPP in Adamawa State.and Vice Chairman, North-East of the yet-to-be registered APC alleged that Othman is been witch hunted by politicalbopponents.
"God willing, the truth will come out and justice will prevail. It is just sad that people are playing politics with the security of lives and property. The actionbof the so-called 'civilians JTF' that burnt down his house must be investigated and their sponsors apprehended," Duhu added.
