Movie industry in Nigeria is the third largest in the world.  Some people who have taken advantage of this huge industry managed to create wealth for themselves. This list includes the richest actresses of Nollywood, based on their endorsement deals and recent performance.

1. Genevieve Nnaji (N70-100 million)

Genevieve Nnaji tops the list. She is well-known not only all over Nigeria, but in other parts of the world as well. She has starred in over 80 Nollywood movies, took part in The Oprah Winfrey Show in 2009 etc. She also launched her own clothing line in 2008 named St. Genevieve, which donates its proceeds to charity. In May 2010, she was named the official face of Make-up Designing in Nigeria. In June 2012, she was chosen as the brand ambassador of Range Rover Evogue by Coscharis Motors. She has at least 2 mansions in Lagos are – one for her and another for her parents.

2. Kate Henshaw (N70-80 million)

Kate starred more in over 50 movies. She won the African Movie Academy Awards in 2008 for Best Actress in a Leading Role in the movie, Stronger than Pain. She used to be the Face of Onga and Face of Blessing Perfume. She also published her autobiography ‘The Life of an Actress: My Story’.

3. Mercy Johnson (N65 million)

Now Mercy is the highest paid actress in Nollywood. By 2008 Mercy Johnson had appeared in fifteen movies. And she earned N11 million from movies alone. She is also an investor in properties. And she owns 6 large land properties in Lagos.

4. Ini Edo (N60 million)

Ini is not only an actress, but also a model and producer. She also invests in real estate. Now she has 9 buildings to her credit. Five of the properties located in Ikotun and Ikorodu areas of Lagos State.

5. Rita Dominic (N58 million)

Another notable and rich actress is Rita Dominic. In 2004 she won the City Peoples Award as the Most Outstanding Actress. She was also a face of Nokia and Glo ambassador. Rita also deals with property investments and two homes which belong to her worth over N40 million. She is also writing a book and going to produce movies herself.

6. Omotola Jalade Ekeinde (N53 million)

This beauty was honored as one of Time Magazine 100 Most Influential People in the World. She adores exotic cars and her garage is estimated to be worth N20 million. Recently she began to conquer music industry. She released two albums ‘Gba’ and Me, ‘Myself & Eyes’. Her album cost her a whopping N13 million including production and promotion.

Nollywood Is not a dumping ground for prostitutes – Nollywood star Amanda Ebeye

Fast-rising Nollywood actress Amanda Ebeye, in a recent interview pens up about her life, career and other interesting topics.

She said she had always wanted to act as a child and she began acting in 2008 and so far it's been challenging.

On why she quit Clinic matters she replied:

"Let’s say it was on financial grounds. The money wasn’t great at that time. But I don’t know of now."

On whether she slept her way to the top?

I can say that over and over again. I did not sell my body. Anybody who says I did that should come out and say it. It’s a wrong mentality that actresses sell their bodies for fame. I know so many people who didn’t do that. We still have decent actors-the industry is not a dumping ground for prostitutes.

Are there roles you won’t accept?

I can play all roles. But recently, I’ve started rejecting some kind of sexual roles because I think I’m growing older and need to start thinking of what I’m impacting on the viewers, especially the children.

But you were once quoted to have said that you can play a nude role for N7.5 billion naira?

I was asked if I could act nude and I said no. The interviewer then said: “What if you are being paid 50 million dollars?” and I said yes. But who is going to pay such money for any actress to go nude? Nobody can do that. It’s impossible. That statement means I cannot! The truth is that Nigerians are very hypocritical. It was just a joke and lots of people took it very serious.

On why she is still single?

She said she is not ready for marriage at the moment, adding that she is not searching. "When it’s God’s time, my kind of man will surface," she said.

Nollywood Receives Another N150m Grant from GEJ, While Twenty Times More Expected

The Federal Government, President
Goodluck Ebele Jonathan have
awarded another N150m to
Nollywood, and it was not the first
time for the industry to receive such.
On March 3, 2013, President Goodluck Jonathan organised a dinner at Marina in Lagos to celebrate Nollywood at 20. On
that occasion, he announced a N3billion grants geared towards supporting the nation’s foremost movie industry, Nollywood.
But ever since the announcement, a sharp division has risen among the members of the umbrella body of actors and actresses, Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), with key
players having different stance on how the money should be disbursed.

What happens to the fund? It’s obvious it has been squandered. While practitioners suffer from lack of funds and humiliation
in the quest to produce films, some
people are busy working to ensure that the money lands in their bank account.

Currently, Nollywood stars operating in the country’s film industry under the recently launched Capacity Training Fund
of the Presidential Intervention scheme called “Project ACT Nollywood, “with an objective to help the industry make
further progress on a more solid
foundation.”

The Federal Government said on
November 20, 2013, Wednesday, it
awarded various grants adding that this was in line with President Jonathan’s vision for the industry.

The training portion of the Capacity
Building Fund valued at about N150 million is dedicated to training and skill acquisition for Nigerian movie
practitioners in all competences along the
value chain of Nigeria’s movie industry.
Paul Nwabuikwu, the Special Adviser to
the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister for the economy has acclaimed that the beneficiaries of the grant
emerged after the applications submitted by the practitioners were processed and found to have met the qualification for the training and skills acquisition programme The training programme covers script writing, directing, film production and production design, special effects, lighting, sound effect, HD techniques, acting, cinematography, make-up, editing, etc.

The grants, which are currently being processed, would enable the practitioners receive high quality training in accredited institutions to improve their competences in various areas of film craft.

She said another N150 million has been set aside as grants to existing Nigerian- owned private institutes that offer training courses, programmes and technical certification in the movie
industry.

The Coordinating Minister for the
Economy and Minister of Finance, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, expressed satisfaction with the development and appealed to individuals or more applications from qualified practitioners.
Hopefully, it works fine.

Another Nollywood Actress Is Dead

The yoruba movie industry is
bereaved once again as one of its
actresses, Falilat Okerede Oketayo has reportedly passed away.
This is coming not long after they lost two other people. First it was the death of ab32-year-old Jane Atayero-Oluseye, followed closely by that of veteran actor,
Pa Ola Ogungbe and now this one.
Falilat who is a member of the Association of Theatre Arts Practitioner of Nigeria, ANTP, in Ogun State reportedly died on
Tuesday at her residence in Sagamu, Ogun State.
According to report, she died after a brief illness.
She is survived by two children, an agedbfather and siblings.
She was described by ANTP in Ogun State as a versatile, energetic and confident actress.

Nollywood Stars Campaign For President Jonathan’s Reelection In 2015

Pro-government rallies, reminiscent of the Abacha era, are on their way back in the country.
This time, they will be at the instance of Nollywood stars whose delegation met yesterday in Abuja with the National Chairman of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) ,Alhaji Bamanga
Tukur, to work out the modalities.
The project is planned to include ‘peace’ rallies and concerts in the six geo-political zones, according to leader of the delegation, Emeka Ike.
It is expected to be in collaboration with celebrities in the music industry and Nigerian footballers.
The organisers said the rallies would be geared toward addressing the drifting
socio-political situation in the country.
Ike told the party chairman that the stars would mobilise Nigerian youths on the need for togetherness and peaceful
coexistence in the country, most
especially at the grassroots.
The artists said the planned rallies would also focus on the need for the PDP to resolve its internal crises so that the ruling party could focus on governance in the interest of the Nigerian people.
According to them, a module has been developed for infusing the culture of responsiveness and national interest in political office holders in the land.
The event, they added, would also feature renowned footballers like Celestica Babayaro and music stars like 2-Face Idibia.
The rallies will be preceded by a press conference in Abuja on Monday followed by mobilisation of Nollywood and football
stars to Maiduguri, the Borno State
capital, which has been the epicentre of the Boko Haram insurgency.

Ike said: “We would round off by
mobilising the Nigerian youths, including Nollywood, football and music stars in our
country to Maiduguri to campaign for peace”.

Tukur expressed delight in the move by the stars to champion the cause of peace and national reconciliation in the country
and urged other Nigerian youths to join the train.

The party chairman said he was of the conviction that the stars could repackage Nigeria for a better image, stressing that the country was in dire need of such
packaging at this point in history.
He encouraged the stars to embark on the planned rally and promised to lend the required inspiration towards the success of the rally.

“I am aware that you people have
conquered Africa because your movies are being watched across Africa and the rest of the world.

“Today, I want to
encourage you to take ownership of your successes and move over to be global citizens,”the chairman said.

A pro-government rally took place on October 6 at the Murtala Muhammed Square in Kaduna to solicit support for President Goodluck Jonathan’s alleged bid to contest the 2015 election.

However, the gathering tagged Northern Youth Rally ended in chaos after the participants began demanding their “share of the money,” the organisers allegedly collected from the presidency.

Security operatives took away an official of the Northern Youth Forum (NYF) from the venue to prevent him from being lynched by the angry youths who threw sand, stones and sachet water at him.
The youths shouted: “Give us our own share, give us our own share.”

On August 25, the First Lady, Mrs.
Patience Jonathan, locked down the
Federal Capital Territory metropolis with what she described as a mass rally and carnival organised to take “stock of the gains recorded so far in the empowerment of Nigerian women and the quest for peace in the country”.
The rally was the brain child of the
National Council of Women Societies (NCWS) in collaboration with the office of the First Lady of the Federation.

The programme was organised as part of the ongoing underground campaign for President Jonathan’s 2015 presidential ambition.

I have the best figure in Nollywood – Crystal Okoye

Crystal Okoye hasn’t got a profile as long as an arm but her profile is rich, unusual and fascinating. Barely a year on the scene, the curvaceous twenty-something has done 18 movies with more than 5 of those as the leading lady- now, that’s a profile even the best in the industry will gawk at. In this chat with Weekend Groove, the newest sensation in Nollywood as she has come to be known shares her experience, her rise to fame and what makes her tick: enjoy…

How did you get into Nollywood?

My journey into Nollywood was as a result of childhood fantasy that turned into a burning desire. Ever since I was a child I have always been obsessed with acting. My first love was developed through watching the Cartoon Network. Just seeing the various characters going through their acts awaken the love in me. Then, I would mimic whatever they do and by so doing, I became obsessed with acting.

Seeing my passion, my family then encouraged me to build the passion into reality.
Later I began to sharpen my skills as an actor by using my mirror to master various mannerisms and acts, using my siblings as collaborators. Little by little, things began to fall into place and here I am living my dream.

Since you had the dream as a child, why didn’t you start as a child?

See, in my house, education comes first. My family believes in education so much they would not allow you to do any thing until you have had a good education. I started pursuing the dream of acting after I have secured an admission into the university. I am currently in my 300 level, studying Public Administration in the University of Nnamdi Azikwe, Anambra State.

When did you actually start acting and how has the journey been for you?

I started acting last year January and since then I have done 18 films. Though the one I am about to start will be my 18th film and I still have three other scripts waiting for me after I finish the next one. I will not say the journey has been easy, I have God and a friend to thank for my fast growth in the industry.

Like in every industry, there are challenges and one of the biggest challenges in the movie industry is sexual harassment. It is almost impossible not to encounter it at one point or another as an upcoming artiste.

But I thank God I have met the right people who have steered me in the right direction. Sexual harassment is always there but it all depends on you, whether to play or not to play.

Most times, they offer you conditions before giving you a role and it’s up to you to take the role or not. I have had to walk out on a job because of such conditions. Before I came into the industry I have heard of it and I was ready because I know what I wanted. It’s not peculiar to the movie industry, sexual harassment is everywhere and as a beautiful girl you must expect people to get out of turn sometimes.
Doing 18 movies in the first year of your career as an actress is a bit fantastic.

How did you pull it off, what was the catch?

There’s no catch, it is grace of God. I am starting another job tomorrow and I have another 3 scripts in my hand. All of them are back to back. As I am finishing one I am taking up another.

It is all by the grace of God and as I said earlier, a friend. The name of that friend is Ogoo Okechi. She’s a costumier. When I met her I have not done more than 2 movies but afterwards she had helped me tremendously.
What she does is to tell the marketer of a film she’s working on to feature me. She has been getting jobs for me. The next role I have now is given to me by Pete Edochie.

But have you ever taken a lead role because that takes a while for so many other stars?

Yes, I have taken lead roles. If I remember correctly, I have taken the lead character in about 5 of the 18 films I have done. I took the lead in: “Ritual War”; “King’s Enemy”; “Release Me Oh Lord”; “Hour of Grace” and “Hour of Mercy”; “Mr Ibu on the Run”; and “Mr Ibu and the Widows”, “Body of the King”; and “Journey of a King”. Some of them are two parts movies.

What about the one where you shaved your hair?

The one you must be talking about is “Widows Cot” but I have just shaved my hair again for another movie. I didn’t play the lead role in “Widows Cot” but I did in “Mr. Ibu and the Widows”.

This shaving of hair is becoming a trend of sort, what’s the catch in it. Were you paid specially because you shaved your hair?

Yes, it attracts special fees but I didn’t shave my hair because of the money, I did it for the love of the role. This is how it works; if I am charging one thousand naira and I have to shave my hair I have to charge five thousand naira.

What you are telling me is that when you shave your hair you get five times as much as the money you are supposed to get?

Yes, in most cases you get that much. I really loved the “Mr Ibu and the Widows”, the concept is superb. It is a comedy with a very good storyline.

What was your first fee?

I collected ten thousand naira in my first film, which was “Wild Heart” and the sequel “Heart of a Wife”. It was a ten-scene appearance for me. You know, for upcoming artistes, it is usually a thousand naira per scene. But as you progress the fee changes. In some instances, it isn’t like because you did twenty scenes you have to collect twenty thousand naira, It varies.

What about the big roles?

It depends on what you negotiate with the marketer. There is no standard as to what you collect, all depends on your negotiations. You cannot say because you appear 50 times you will collect 50 thousand naira it entails more than that. But as an upcoming star you don’t have to haggle too much about fees. The most important thing is to have the roles coming for you to prove yourself. Right now I am not doing it for the money, I am doing it for fame.

So, after shaving your hair, you go around in 'wigs or with the shaved hair?

Oh, I go around with the shaved hair. Everywhere I go people call me African queen (laughs)

What has worked for you in the industry; your talent or beauty?

I will say both. Before then I used to look at myself in the mirror and tell myself “Crystal, you are beautiful”. I am beautiful. I am well - shaped. I have straight legs. I decided to come into the industry, not just with my physical attributes but also because of my talents.

In Nollywood, you may be beautiful but if you are not talented you can’t get any where but I thank God I have everything. The talent, the beauty, the figureand everything. In Nollywood, beauty and talent goes hand in hand.

What about your embarrassing moments?

The one I can remember happened when I was still looking to have a shot at acting.
Then, I reported at a location and the producer gave me a note where he instructed me to meet him at a hotel room. I felt so embarrassed. He told me the role would not be available for me if I didn’t report at the hotel. I left the set and never showed up for the job. If you want me I want you to come up to me and tell me you want me but tying it to anything else puts me off.

What do you think are your selling points?

My selling point are my hips. I think Mercy Johnson’s hips are just learning where mine are. I know that I am well-shaped. If you ask me, I have got the best shape in Nollywood.

And it is just not my hips alone, my eyes, my legs and my height as a woman all compliment my nice figure.

You may say I don’t have the front but I have the back. The back speaks for me.

Were you actually named Crystal?

My name is actually Crystabel but I named myself Crystal. The name was actually suggested by a friend and since crystal means something that glitters it suits me very well.

For me, it is more than just a name, it is a source of inspiration. It reminds me I have to be shining everyday to live up to my name.

Is it true that upcoming actors and actresses now pay producers to be featured in films?

They do that. Some pay their way to be featured. Yes, it is happening alright.

Have you ever had to do that?

God forbid. I would rather give up the job than succumb to that. I am an actress, the producer is supposed to pay me not the other way round.

What’s your idea about sex. Should it be done only after marriage?

Sex is a free gift from God, meant for us, man and woman to enjoy ourselves. I don’t believe in that ‘after marriage’ crap. I believe in Sex before marriage because it is very important you know partner very well, sexually and otherwise, before you two are sworn together
for life.

If you don’t know the person very well (sexually) before marriage, what happens if the person doesn’t live up to your expectations?
What if the person cannot perform?

I don’t think there’s a woman who wants to end up with a man who cannot perform.

So, a man must be able to perform before you can consider marrying him?

Yes o. If a man cannot perform I have no business with him. You have to be a complete man to be with me.

So you prefer sex to money in marriage?

My dear, money comes first o. Money rules the world. But sex too is very important because without sex the marriage cannot be sweet. God has given sex as a gift to enjoy.

Who are your role models in the industry?

My first person is Pete Edochie. I see in him a father figure, a father I have lost. Then there is Bukky Ajayi, Onyeka Onwenu, Stephanie Okereke and some others.

FG Approves N300m Capacity Building Fund For Nollywood

The Federal Government has
approved N300 million out of the
three billion naira intervention fund for capacity building to boost the Nigerian film industry.
This is contained in a statement issued in Abuja on Sunday by Mr Paul Nwabuikwu, Spokesman for the Minister of F1inance and Coordinating Minister for the
Economy, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala.

"Action on the three billion naira supportpromised the Nigerian film industry byPresident Goodluck Jonathan hasformally commenced with the roll out ofa N300 million capacity building fund.''

The statement noted that the capacity building fund was the first of a series of initiatives planned under "Project Act Nollywood'', adding that It was made up
of two components.

According to the statement, the first
component is a Training Fund of N150 million, dedicated to training and skills acquisition for Nollywood practitioners inall competencies along the entire value chain of the industry.

The statement said it includes;
scriptwriting, directing, production and production design, special effects,lighting, sound, HD techniques, acting,
M cinematography, make-up and editing, among others.
It said that the second component was the Capacity Development Fund which was also worth N150 million..

According to the statement, grants will be given to existing Nigerian-owned private institutes that offer training courses, programmes, and technical certification in the movie industry.

The statement said the fund might beused to upgrade existing facilities,procure equipment and develop internalcapacity to offer a set of courses and training programmes that would address
key skills gaps.

It said that institutes to benefit from the fund must have a prove of registration from Jan. 1, 2013, and be competent enough to train people according to
global best practices.

The statement said that the intervention Project ACT Nollywood, would be
managed by the Coordinating Minister for the Economy and the Minister of Tourism, Chief Edem Duke.
Okonjo-Iweala in the statement said the establishment of the fund underscored government's commitment to supporting Nollywood in recognition of its
contributions to the economy.

"This is the first of the initiatives planned under Project Act Nollywood, and it
shows that the president is keeping his word to the industry and to Nigerians.

"Nollywood deserves this support
because it has added value to the
economy by creating jobs and acting as an ambassador to the country.

"It is also projecting Nigeria to many parts of the world that hitherto, knew little or nothing about the country," it quoted Okonjo-Iweala as saying.

It said that the overall objective of
Project Act Nollywood was to support the industry in a sustainable way that practitioners could leverage on to improve their capacity and output in key areas.

"The fund is open for applications from July to December 2013. Courses commencing after Dec. 31st are eligible provided the application is received before Dec. 31 2013.''

It said that guidelines for applications indicated that applicants must be
Nigerians and industry practitioners among other requirements.
