Ten Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SANs) representing various interests on Tuesday made appearances at the Anambra Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal opening sitting in Awka.
The panel chaired by Justice Ishak Bellow began its sitting on the petitions emanating from the November 16 Anambra governorship poll.
Pre-hearing was set to commence on February 4.
The petitioners are challenging the victory of the All Progressives Grand Alliance's (APGA's) candidate Chief Willie Obiano on grounds of irregularities in the election process.
In attendance were the lead counsel to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Adegboyega Awomolo; counsel to Obiano, Onyechi Ikpeazu (SAN); counsel to APGA, Patrick Ikweto (SAN); counsel to Sen. Chris Ngige and APC, Emeka Ngige (SAN); Clement Ezike for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP); and counsel to the PDP governorship candidate Tony Nwoye, George Igbokwe.
Justice Bello said the date was chosen to enable parties file their replies, and asked them to do it promptly.
He also appealed for the cooperation all parties, and called the media to be cautious in their reports.
"The media should not be sensational; there is a great responsibility on you (media) to be cautious in your reports for the peaceful co-existence of this country," he said.
On November 18, the Independent National Election Commission (INEC) announced that November 16-17 Anambra governorship election was inconclusive and ordered a supplementary election in 208 polling units. Later, on December 1, the APGA candidate Chief Willie Obiano was declared winner of the poll. The conduct of election, however, sparked controversy.
